If we are going to compete this year.......

Rather than put it on individual players last week and talk about last weeks game i thought it may be interesting to see what you guys think, moving forward, are the keys to us perfoming well this year.

Many times we talk about individual players and not about the type/style of football itself.

I think under the new rules its going to take the following:

Dominance in the tackle - this is the most important area - especially for us as we have the pack to take advantage. Teams have to make the dominant tackle to get the extra half a second out of the play the ball. In the first two games we seemed to be very slow in playing the ball because we were being dominated - If you look at our strike as well - this does not suit PJ and Riddell at all as they thrive on the roll on.

Wrapping the ball up in the tackle - missing last week, but moving forward, has to be part of our technique. I don't really think it should ever get to the situation where PJ is isolated to make a ball and all dominant tackle on guys like Fa'alogo. We need to get a couple in the tackle at least - everytime. I reckon the boys will fix that pretty quickly though.

Selective involvement - i know alot of people thought Hindy wasn't that great last week - i think to say he played bad was a bit harsh. I think what people are dissappointed in is the fact that he wasn't "effective" as he can be. My understanding is that Morro was purchased to shift the load. Hindy still seems to be trying to tackle everything that moves. While that isn't necessarily a bad thing(and its hard to stop guys with hearts the size of Hindy's from doing this), i think its going to sap him of the effectiveness that he used to be able to run and tackle with.

Defence out wide - The successful sides stick to their formula in every single situation - whether that is the up and in or sliding pattern. Our outside backs just have to communicate and trust the system a bit more.

Kicking game(And kick chase) - we need to improve here - i think Morris and Smith kick fine - we just need to apply more pressure (Missing last week -big time)

Anyway - sorry if i've bored anyone - just my take on where i think we can improve to make us better - i'm not proclaiming to be a coach or anything. Just interested to see if i'm watching the same game as other people.

I personally am dissappointed at the fact that Eric Grothe, a player with arguably the biggest right fend in the game has been forced to play on the right wing(Who is he going to fend? - the Fox camera man?)

BTW - How good is Tim Smith. I reckon this kid is going to be sensational. You know you have a talent when you go to the game looking forward to see how the individual performs. Very impressed.

I reckon we'll come out strong this week. Hopefully we can contain Kimmorley. If so, "the Crab" won't do much.

Cheers

Like what you have said Mr Drake.
However, these seem to be the same old inflictions of three years past.

Lets just hope some miracle can happen and they attend to these details.

That's precisely what gets us into the mess half the time.

We get 3 or 4 players to tackle the bloke, the guy offloads and all of a sudden there is a huge gap.

But yes - generally you make a lot of sense.

And I'll go out on a limb here - I'll bet the coach tells them the same things. Yet the boys don't perform like they should...

Mate, in those 2 games we have shown no improvement in our defence from previous years.

And the only notable imrpovements have come from new signings such as Morrison, Marsh, Riddell, Robinsons, etc.

I agree with alot of what you say.

As suity said. We have allowed ourselves to be dominated in the tackle for a couple of years, it has almost appeared to be a tactic not to fight in the tackle to conserve energy. Hopefully this will improve. it has to for our hookers and go forward to improve.

Agree with you on Hindy, and add Morro to the equation. The irony is, teams often select the best attacking player to run at in the defensive line, to try and tire him. (SBW had to make 19 tackles in 15 minutes in the first half against the Cows last week). But against parra they don't have to try and run at Hindmarsh, he stands infront of them where ever they are. he needs to go back to a conventional back rowers role.

Kick chase was poor last week, but by and large it has been good in recent years, and lets hope last week was an aboration.

And i would like to see Grothe go back to the left wing. Takes alot away from his ability being on the right.

The most dissapointing thing about last week was the players attitude. If they bring attitude to the game along with some intenseity we will win more than we lose. Players have to want to win, The mental part of the game is so important along with talent.

Nup....has to come from within. If they can't fire up for a game then they shouldn't be allowed to lace up their boots.

Exactly. It doesn't matter which team you oppose week in week out. Who cares if it Souths , Dogs or Roosters. Your attitude has to be right. Play from the heart and ensure the intensity is there from start to finish. It wasn't there and needs to be addressed. The rest will come. Lift lads and play like your life depends on it.
