Flame away - but I actually think kicking off was the correct decision. They kicked off deep, tied them down in the Sharks end, and had they just tackled for the 6, and/or waited for a Sharks fumble, they would have been in field goal territory.
It's all about territory and by kicking off, you are effectively playing the game where you want to.
