In a song whats a hook?

Can some one explain to me what a hook is in a song
and give me a example of some from some green day songs
if you can, cos im familar with them.

A hook is generally a collection of notes (typically in the chorus) which sounds cool and is and memorable.

A part of a song that makes you go "Wow"..

Or simply the catchy bit, that gets you in.

For example in Longview, the hook would be the riff after "and I'm f**kling lazy"... doesn't have to be a riff, could be words or music, could be in the chorus or not.

Hook= Franz Fernidads "Take me out" the guitar bit just after the fast intro it then gets played throughout the song.....infectious to say the least.

A bridge is usually the change before a solo or chorus or after a solo, to break up the monotomy of a song.

E.g.s of a bridge are:
Greeday - Holiday

The representative from California has the floor"

Zieg Heil to the president gasman
Bombs away is your punishment
Pulverize the Eiffel towers
Who criticize your government
Bang bang goes the broken glass and

A hook is merely a catchy part the sticks in your head, a great description is carcharias one above. It may be the bridge the solo or whatever but the catchy bit.
