Incident in the Panthers-Tigers game

In my opinion, that's a no try and and a scrum to the team in possession of the ball where the referee obstructs the player.
When the referee interferes with a play directly (ie. the ball) they award a scrum to the "attacking" team, which in the rulebook is not actually the team with the ball... but is actually the team with field position. Stupid way to determine who is the attacking team. But that's the way the rules work.

In this case, the referee actually interfere with the play itself. So play on is a fair call. He couldn't disallow a try because of a potential defender. That would be giving to defending team the advantage. And unfairly penalising the attacking team through a situation which was out of their hands.

If the ref interferes with play, it's a scrum, with the ball going to the team with the territorial (attacking) advantage.
Last night he wasn't actually involved with the play itself (ie. he didn't touch the ball or interfere with the attacking team), in which case it should be play on.

He and a potential defender got in each others way. That has nothing to do with the attacking team who should be getting advantage played in these situations. It's up to the players and the referee to avoid/minimalise getting in each others way.

In ancient times TeamSatan always used the ref as a shepard ...before diving over and scoring the match winning try .....

i recall a scenario a few years ago where a ref (harrigan i hink) actually went to the video ref to see if he had inadvertantly caused an obstruction. cant remember the outcome, or perhaps he did go to the ref but actually pulled it back claiming he was in the way...

someone with a bettter memory may recall. i think it was a saints game
