Indigenous All Stars

Anglo-saxon is a race and there'd be a massive outcry if someone wanted to form an anglo-saxon team for any sport in any country in the world.

Anglo Saxon is not a race and the NRL All Stars team is made up from a mix of non indigenous players of many races.

The 2010 game was one of the best games of the year IMO

This years was pretty dull, hopeully in 2012 both teams will bring the same intensity

I enjoy the game.

This team is really good except for the fact that there is no one to do the dirty work and make 400 tackles.

While the 2 are linked, there is nothing stopping the programmes from running in the absence of the game so your argument does not hold up.

Neither does yours since the progammes could run without the game but they dont. Therefore those kids benefit from the game.

My argument was based on the fact the programmes could be run without the game so your comment makes no sense.

I'd much rather the indigenous team played against other nations in test match style games. It would be more worthwhile IMHO.

Um your argument is stupid.

I guess those indigeneous kids didnt benefit at all from have indegeneous NRL stars visit them and speak to them, or from seeing their culture represented on as a team on the biggest stage.

I didn't say they didn't benefit, I'm sure they did but Indiginous NRL stars don't need a game to visit regional communities.

True but its the game that gets them to do it. You think all those boys would be doing it without the game?? Some would but probably a minority.

Yes some would and even more would with some encouragement. Blokes like David Peachey, George Rose and Preston Campbell have spent a lot of time in these communities and it didn't take an all stars game to get them there. Most of them seem to put a pretty high priority on helping indiginous kids so I don't think it would take a lot of encouragement to get them out there. If they don't want to do it, forcing them to by selecting them for an exhibition game doesn't seem like the right way to go about it. There have been plenty of players, both indigenous and non-indigenous that have spent time working with kids in regional areas and more of it should be encouraged but I don't think the all-stars game is a worthwhile exercise. As others have mentioned, it puts players at an increased risk of injury for a game that means very little to most.

I agree that in a rugby league sense its pretty useless but I think your underestimating what this game means to indigeneous people, it definately meant a lot to Preston.

That may be so. But what does it mean to Billy Slater, Anthony Watmough, Paul Gallen? What does it mean to the clubs who may potentially lose a player to a season ending injury in a game that means so little? Origin, Test matches and even City v Country are a somewhat acceptable risk for players and clubs but this circus really isn't.
