Indigenous players -Dragons

I'm Aboriginal and this quota idea seems a bit weird?

I mean we're already massively over-represented in the NRL (at last check I think we made up around 2-3% of the Aus population, but around 20% of contracted NRL players). I mean just look at the QLD SOO side, Test side, or the fact that the current NSW coach is Indigenous.

This quota idea just brings a lot of unecessary politics and potential resentment into play. Could be very destablising for clubs.

Slightly off topic, this reminds me in the early 90's the now defunct Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) ran a promotional poster with Jeff Hardy and Ricky Walford in their Dragons gear. It was around about the same time the image of Nicky Winmar pointing at his skin to the Collingwood crowd became famous.

I remember because around that time, the club had a strong association with the Indigenous community (perhaps this was driven by Walford and Hardy themselves).

I think that the promotion of Indigenous players as role models both within and beyond aboriginal communities is a worthwhile idea. IMO the plight of many indigenous people is, to a great degree, the result of centuries of deprivation and derision.

If promoting indigenous backgrounds can raise the self-esteem of those who need it and profile the contribution of aboriginal players to sport then I'm a huge fan.

Much has been done already but it is a concept that again IMO should be built upon.

Coaching assistance and improvement of facilities in outback communities would also money well spent.

I am just throwing the idea out there. I'm a bit of a ideas person and we do have indigenous rounds, women in league etc..

It should be up to the NRL and clubs to give indigenous kids as good a chance as any other kid to succeed, then it is up to the individual if he has the ambition to want to work harder to work his way to 1st grade.
No easy ride.

Good call mate, like I said just throwing it out there.

What came to my mind, Preston Campbell. If he can do what he accomplished. Most players could do the same

Can anyone here help me with the names of indigenous players in our team including any arriving in 2014. I was having a debate with a mate of mine today and he come up with a left field idea of every team having a minimum 5 indigenous players contracted to each club. Good idea or not?
Works well for the South African Cricket team.
