Indigenous Players in the NRL

Before i make this post i want to make a couple of points.
1) Im a white european australian
2) Im not some do gooder Affirmative action Politically correct clown.

I think one of the best things about a the NRL that we tend to over look is the Indigenous players, personally i like the way most of them tend play with flair and are prepared to show the personality on the field.
Ive always enjoyed watching blokes like Blacklock and Mundine who you can see geniuly love playing the game and doing well.

I know theres others out there who'd rather dwell on negatives and how some players in the past have gone off the rails. People who do say that i will present you with one name Gordon Tallis yep he sure is a hot head and a bugger on the field but what has Gordi ever done off the field to bring the game is disrepute. Same can be said for Mal Mengiua, Cliff Lyons and many others.

Personally I guess my enjoyment of watching these guys play stems from two things they are so natural gifted and secondly my club manly seems to have a great tradition in nuturing Indigenous Players at getting the most out of them.

The NRL came out said this week they are going to get clubs to adopt rural areas and thats a great idea id say go a step further and get the clubs to adopt an Indigenous Township or Tribe and send players out their and coach young kids and get them in to our game and give them more opportunities to excel.

What i want to do in this thread is get a list by club of Indigenous Australian Players by Club i think we would be surprised by how many we have in our comp. We are going back and nuturing country areas to improve the game at grass roots i think we should also concerntrate on our Indigenous areas as well.

Roosters:

Justin Hodges

Shannon Heggarty

Aboriginal players have given me a great deal of joy to watch, over the years; blokes like Percy Knight and Larry Corowa and David Grant from Balmain; Andrew Walker; Ricky Walford; the list would be very long if I went thru them all.

I think the point that Ozbash was making is that the Warriors do their bit in promoting football amongst the indigenous population in NZ. Their relationship to Maori footballers would be the same as Australian clubs have to Aboriginal footballers. That said I don't think that Polynesians need any special encouragement to play league, they have huge standing in the sport and seem to take to it naturally.
I do think that the Australian clubs however should foster closer links with Aboriginal communities, both in the cities and in rural areas. I know that some AFL clubs already do this.

Well said. NRL reps need to visit the interior to see the towns that are almost completely isolated. The AFL always visit these areas around the NT, and northern SA, plus a bit of west NSW so we need to start up some visits too.
