Big man on campus - Inglis gives university degree serious thought

RABBITOHS star Greg Inglis, one of the code's highest-paid players, is contemplating an opportunity to enrol at Sydney University and to prepare for life after football.

The 24-year-old met Professor Shane Houston, the deputy vice-chancellor of indigenous strategy and services at Sydney University, on Wednesday to discuss the educational opportunities available to him and other NRL players through a program designed for elite athletes.

Meeting Houston, a Gangulu man from central Queensland, made a big impression on the Queensland and Australian representative. He suggested footballers, regardless of their status, needed to seize upon the opportunities and initiatives to improve themselves.

Inglis's South Sydney teammate, prop Ben Ross, is poised to enrol in a veterinary science course and there are players in the club's under-20 squad studying a variety of university courses, including law.

''I'm thinking of doing a business course but I'm keeping my options open,'' Inglis said.''I met with Professor Houston at the university and it was great. [Adult] education is one of those opportunities rugby league offers nowadays that's hard not to take up. It's important to think about life after footy.

''A lot of blokes didn't a few years ago, but I've found as you play more games you start thinking about what you'll do [later on] … Some younger players are finishing year 12 now and getting their HSC, but I finished [school] in year 11 and was pretty much picked up by Melbourne straight away. The university's elite athlete program allows sportsmen to have time to train, compete and study.''

Inglis said he was impressed by the magnificent sandstone buildings and the grounds at the university, joking it felt as though he had stumbled upon the Hogwarts school set for the Harry Potter films. ''It has a great feel to it, there's a lot of heritage there and I am excited by the opportunity,'' he said. ''It's a chance to do something away from football that's going to be useful for my future. I'd encourage any young player to challenge themselves and to study.''

The Rabbitohs host Parramatta at ANZ Stadium tomorrow night and Inglis said he held high expectations for his centre partner, Dylan Farrell, who scored his third hat-trick in his 23rd top grade game in last week's amazing comeback win over St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium. ''He's a quiet achiever, isn't he?'' Inglis said. ''I think I've scored six [hat-tricks] in a hundred and something games, so he's developing a good habit of being in the right place at the right time. He's very level-headed and very mature for a young player and I think he'll go a long way on his life's journey in and outside of footy.''

The f**kwit trolls aside, I think this is a very intelligent decision by GI.

So many footballers think the money will last forever and give no thought to life after footy. Good on him if he does choose to help himself for later in life with a degree.

Hopefully he learns where the border is.

In all seriousness though, it's a good decision.

It would help if he had more than half a dozen brain cells to rub together though. A few close friends of mine went to school with Gi and said he's dumb as a sack of hammers, and that's putting it mildly.

In saying that, not everyone has to go to uni.

Personally, I reckon Inglis would make a great fisherman. He's already got a boat!

Well I'm sure your mates careers don't go anywhere near rivalling GI's.

Don't cry princess - I'm not knocking GI's abilities on the football field. Just saying that the idea of him having the smarts to get a uni degree is ridiculous.

:lol::lol: At least he'd know a few people in the class. Chris Sandow for one...
So close. You started out doing it so well but then your thinly veiled racism got a little too obvious and you ruined it for yourself. Better luck next time.
