Injured Bollinger out of World Cup

Australia's injury worries have worsened with Doug Bollinger to be sent home from the World Cup due to an ankle injury that may require surgery. The Australians came to India already missing Michael Hussey, Nathan Hauritz, Ryan Harris, Clint McKay, Xavier Doherty and Shaun Marsh due to injuries, but Bollinger is the first member of the squad to be flown home mid-tournament.

Bollinger suffered pain in his left ankle during the first warm-up game against India and although the soreness eased and he was available for Monday's match against Zimbabwe, the problem intensified when the team arrived in Nagpur. Peter Siddle would be the logical replacement for Bollinger, but the selectors have not yet decided on who should join the squad.

"He's got a thing called posterior impingement," Australia's physio Alex Kountouris said. "Basically, the bones at the back of the ankle, when he lands to bowl, one bone hits another bone and the bone becomes really inflamed and irritated. It irritates all the soft tissue around it as well. It's fairly common in fast bowlers.

"Brett Lee has had five or six lots of surgery on that in the past. It's reasonably common but he [Doug] has never had it before, so we thought we'd push it for as long as we could go, and he just can't go any further at the moment. We need to take him out of cricket for a while, whether he needs just rest or needs other treatment, maybe even surgery, that will be decided in the next few days."

Bollinger will have scans in Australia to determine whether he will need an operation and if that is required, he will have several months to recover before Australia's next Test tour, to Sri Lanka in August. The problem first appeared towards the end of the recent one-day series against England, but the pain did not become significant until the team was preparing for the match against New Zealand.

"It was only when he bowled yesterday here it became really sore again," Kountouris said. "He tried bowling again today and he was really sore today, so based on that, based on the sort of injury it is we're going to send him back to Australia and look at what our options are for treatment."

Although the Australians might like to fly Michael Hussey in as Bollinger's replacement, ICC rules don't allow a player who has already been withdrawn to return. In any case, Bollinger's injury leaves John Hastings as the only backup pace bowler in Australia's squad, behind Shaun Tait, Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson, who again proved themselves a formidable trio by dismissing New Zealand for 206

Who to send over? We don't have much in the pace category, only Victorians really. Spin we have Doherty and O'Keefe back bowling.

Would definitely be going for SOK. The pace has worked well against the Zimbos and Sheepfanciers, but against the top guns it could be another story. Krazy and Smith have gone ok too, but if either has a loss of form we're screwed. His batting would be a real bonus too.

Could just play him instead of Captain Victorian ;-)

Steve O'Keefe maybe?

Probably Siddle...

totally agree, we need to beef up our spinning stocks however I doubt our selectors will see it that way

we need our next best wicket taker in those conditions and that would exclude some one like Siddle or the like on those flat pitches

I reckon they might send Hussey, I'd prefer SOK, but if there looking at spinners it will be Doherty, and we all know who the most likely suspect is if it's pace bowler...and then watch them put him straight in the team.

Can they still send over Hussey after he has already been taken out of the original squad???

Bollinger is to return home today to begin treatment for major inflammation in his left ankle, known as posterior impingement.

The national selection panel has yet to lock in a replacement, but Siddle shapes as a logical option, given his Test experience, his knowledge of Indian conditions and the fact skipper Ricky Ponting is a fan.

With Australia's pace stocks ravaged by injury, a left-field bolter could be Victorian rookie James Pattinson, who was named in the preliminary 30-man World Cup squad.

The selectors could consider veteran batsman Michael Hussey, who was initially ruled out through injury, but Ponting said the Australians would almost certainly opt for another bowler.

"I'll have a talk to the selectors tonight about who the likely replacement's going to be, and we need to get moving pretty quickly for that person so they can get over here, join us in Colombo and start getting acclimatised in case we need to play them in the next game," Ponting said.

"We've got a few things to talk about and think about.

"We've got John Hastings in the sheds waiting for an opportunity. He's been particularly good in every training session and a couple of practice games that he played at the start of the tournament. I thought even in Australia, the games he played there were particularly good.

"He'll be well suited to these conditions. I'll have a chat with the selectors and coach and see who the most adequate replacement is.

"We have a lot of fast bowlers around the country who are on the sidelines so we'll have a good chat, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't a bowler," he said.

Hussey, 35, has recovered from his hamstring injury and resumed for Wanneroo in Perth's district competition.

He will play for WA in the Shield game against Queensland starting at the WACA on Thursday.

Apparently the selectors have narrowed the list of potential replacements down to three, Peter Siddle, James Pattinson & Dirk Nannes...out of those 3, I'd send Pattinson for the experience, but it's fairly obvious who'll get the nod

I'd take Nannes out of that lot, Siddle struggled last week against the baby Blues

I honesty cant believe they are not considering another spinner, like I said previously, we got cover for batsmen and quicks but only one spinner while other terms are playing 2 or 3 spinners every game.

If Crazy gets injured we have no spinners at all, except Smith who is an all rounder.

If White fails against SL on the weekend and Hussey comes through the Shield game OK, dont be surprised to see him on the plane.
