Interchanges with game controller

I am playing with an 8 button game, 6 normal buttons and the two at the back now if i assign all these buttons i am not left with a button to make interchanges. does anybody else have this problem and is there a way to resolve this?

Escape is always pause, use that.

i just take side step out of the game and use that button

on my gravis eliminator you cant make interchanges with the keyboard if u use the controller
