Interesting Media Opinions

I'm sure the next 18 months will bring countless good, bad, and ugly comments about the World Cup.
Every Rugby League, Union, Soccer and VFL pundit will be itching to drop their 2 cents worth - predictably most of it negative, even from the so called Leaguies.

First off the bat we have an interesting one from Gus Gould's twitter. In direct contrast to Mascord's opinion that making cash is the WCs highest priority:

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...y-league-world-cup-games-20160713-gq5404.html

It is the only income for four years for the RLIF, an organisation with an unprepossessing office it shares with the RLEF and RFL below street level in Fitzrovia, London. That's it. The sport of rugby league everywhere but Australia and the UK is expected to survive (not just internationally but completely) on the profits from one tournament and whatever it can get in government grants for keeping kids off the street.

we have this from Gus

Despite my opinion that Western Sydney, Newcastle should have got some games, Gus' reasoning is wayyy off. As usual with Gus and International Footy.

Gus is clueless on most matters. People talk of him like some guru but reality is most of his statements are either for the benefit of his club or are based on a game that existed 30 years ago in Sydney.

I feel like Gus would be such a perfect figure head of the ARLC....

I dont want him to have any power or influence, he has proven himself to be an utter f*ckwit.

But he speaks to what fans "wish" RL was, a gut feeling of passion beyond business formulas. If he could use this positively to sell the game (rather than kicking it as he does at every opportunity these days) he would be valuable to the game.

Right now though, he is nothing but a pest...

Gus is the same guy who takes the kudos for getting Penrith back to a viable state.
Therefore Gus should be aware ,else he is a dumb lump, that no sporting organisation wants to lose money on any venture. We did that in RLWC2000,and learnt a bitter lesson, hitting the Pacific Islands in particular.

RLWCs are a celebration of the sport agreed ,but they are the only real source of decent income for International development. The RLWC organisers did the only commercially sensible thing ,in order to maximise income. That is, secure bids/funding from interested areas around this country and NZ/PNG.

It is patently obvious Gould has SFA idea of what RLWC funds are used .I'm glad he is not my financial planner for Super ,he'd have all my money invested @ 1% savings accounts .I shakes me head ,when I hear/read some of his comments.Passionate he is, but he shows ignorance and goes off at a tangent at times without little thought.

Gus doesn't care what the money's used for. In his view the WC should be by Australia for Australia.
I very much doubt he gives a rats arse what happens in Italy Spain Serbia Lebanon Philippines Canada or anywhere else

Gould also forgets that rugby union has always used their world cup as a money making opportunity to allow the money to be pumped back into developing the game in other countries. Rugby League is basically at the stage now that union was in the late 80's.

Alarming news in today's SMH:

World Cup no cash cow

We told you last week that Rugby League World Cup boss Michael Brown's voicemail message for Panthers boss Corey Payne was "nuclear".

A few days later, having heard the message, a shocked and appalled NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg decided to do some detonating of his own.

Well, Brown technically resigned but you know the drill.

Brown was hellbent on turning as much profit as possible out of the tournament, and that's why Sydney was snubbed for all but two pool matches because the NSW government wasn't prepared to fork out millions.

Nobody at League Land Central could tell me if Brown was on a big, fat commission as he was for soccer's very successful Asian Cup but it wasn't going to matter anyway.

Word is the Rugby League World Cup will be lucky to break even, despite former NRL boss Dave Smith predicting it was going to make millions.

The bit about Brown getting a commission is a bit of a concern though.Makes sense when you consider the venue selections.

Why a concern? It's normal business practice to be on a performance based commission. I'm sure one of his kpi's was income and profit. If it wasn't it should have been!

Pay based on performance and success...

How is this concerning?? He looks like he has make the comp a profit before it has even begun.

Or do we like it when the IRLF is broke?
