Watching the Rugby 7s that are currently going on at the Olympics and despite being fun admittedly it has made me long for the times where we had the NRL Nines and the International Nines as well, what happened to this concept? Google says the NRL Nines were cancelled due to a "packed pre season schedule" in 2021 but that can't possibly be true anymore since most teams only take part in 2 trial matches with minimal travel and that's it.
They should consider bringing it back, a lot of the games were pretty exciting and it was fun to see the old guys getting out there for 15-20 minutes for their old teams as well. A concept like this could be used to build the game in multiple geographical locations such as NZ, PNG or even regional NSW/QLD. International 9s would create another possibility of doing this and would create more competition for the international game which is something that could do with improving also.
