Ipod or other mp3 player?

I've decided I need an mp3 player soon, especially because I'm going overseas in a few months and I'll definitely need my music to get me through the trip. So the question is, what do I buy? I don't want to spend any more than $300 so I've been looking at the Ipod nano....but that is only 2gb. Is it worth it, or am I really paying for the Ipod name. Are there cheaper alternatives out there with decent storage space for a similar price?

Any suggestions? Thanks :)

Ive got a 2gig nano and it does the job well. The battery life is, however, only ok and when you want it charged you have to take it to a friggin computer. But apart from that it's fine - good looks and sound quality.
I believe you can also get them in 4 gig for about 55 bucks more.

Correct, iPod nano 4GB is $359. If you want to charge it direct from a wall outliet rather than from your computer you need to buy the power adaptor for it, which is $48.

my ipod recently went catus on me, so i brought a creative 5gig MP3 player, no video or anything but i must say i wont ever go back to ipod, my creative sh*ts on it in all departments. From user friendly software, battery life and size and weight, plus for 5gig it cost me 200 (got it on sale for 150) where id pay upward of 300 for an ipod

no need to buy any accessories to charge from a wall either
my battery life lasts me about 14 hours, or 3 shifts at work

If you look a few threads down the page, you'll see that I had an iPod video which was a heap of sh*t as far as battery life went, so I took it back and got a 20gb Creative Zen Touch, and I'll never go back to iPod again.

Battery life is immaculate, and you don't need a computer to charge it, as you get an outlet adapter when you buy the player. I paid $399 for the 20gb, but they may have smaller sizes for under $300, I don't really know.

I bought it from the Good Guys, who are pretty cheap and give you an even bigger discount if you pay cash.

Creative's are way better, I own a 30gig Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra
ZEN_XTRA_30G_PDT-67b356600d855670a4d79040ac98017d.jpg

and have had it for a couple of years, forgot how much it cost though. The software is great, and they are built a lot stronger than an ipod, if you drop an ipod, and it will usually break, but with a creative mp3 the worst that would happen is a scratch.

I got my Ipod at Christmas and it's been working fine. It's the 30GB Video Ipod, yesterday it went a bit wierd, and started skipping through all the songs.
The battery life is total rubbish, but if you keep your back light on for more than 4 seconds it runs it out more.

I bought an iPod Nano for 1 of my kids,no problems so far and she loves it.
I bought the Creative Zen for my other daughter. It was fine for 2 weeks and then it wouldn't boot up.
I sent it back to Creative last week.

What is this? iPod or Creative thread 3000? The last one hasn't even dropped off the page!

I've only had one problem with my iPod - it wouldn't turn off after i had it plugged into the computer. Running the battery down (which took a long f**king time) sorted it out.
