Is dropping players too harsh now???

I would like everyones opinion on my theory as to why Hages -and a lot of other coaches - find it hard to drop players now.

I think it is because of the competition structure. Unless a player is under 20, then it means they go back to 'park' footy. I am sure any coach would not wish that on guys like Cayless, Grothe, Hayne etc.

Under the old system, playing reserves wasn't as bad in most cases. At least you still got to play before the 1sts - same ground, same club, same colours. Now you are asking players to play in suburban ovals for different sides which they have absolutely no history or affiliation with - and wear different colours. I have no doubt that coaches find it much harder to do now than before.

Is it too harsh on a player now? I think it is and I would really like to know if the coaches feel the same way. If they do, then it is a real problem with our current competion structure because it will only encourage mediocrity ! Thoughts??

You sure you're not talking about the Roosters NRL side...

I honestly don't think the structure will change things too much in the next couple of years; I mean sides like Norths, Central Coast etc have been doing it in NSW for a while and the Storm, Broncos and Titans have the same thing. As long as the training structure of the NRL side is implemented by the NSW cup team then the transition should be the same as it always was.

You mean having to play a stress free game of footy in front of a handfull of people and still pick up their 2-300k per annum pay cheques?

Your right it is way to harsh on the precious little darlings!!

Coaches job is to make sure the team wins with the best possible squad in his eyes. If you’re a coach and don’t want to drop a player cause it means they will be playing ‘park footy’ then you probably shouldn’t be a coach.

A trip to park footy may also serve as a reminder to players to pull their fingers out if they are underperforming.

I think that players under the most pressure and in order are:

Grothe

TT

Hauraki

Paulo

Reddy

Wagon

However Wagon would be the first player I would introduce to the Wentworthville coach.

I would give Grothe another shot. At least give him a chance to make amends !

He was outstanding against Tits!

I see what you mean and that's a good point, though Hagan never dropped players when he was at the Knights either.

Having guys play for Wenty in ways can be damaging to first grade, they're not going to be playing in a large stadium with people cheering them on. So extra pressure is there when they do play firsts. Some clubs in the past have had to do without reserve grades teams at all though, it's something players and coaches will have to get used to.

Or is it more a case of coaches being unwilling to admit that they are wrong and have pissed away a good chunk of their salary cap on a lemon?

Seems to me they have no problem dropping the cheaper players.

i have always been under the impression that players sign a contract to play at their best possible ability for the monumental pay they receive. it has become quite clear that they are not doing so, doesn't this mean that they are in breach of contract? if this is the case they should be dropped to park footy and their payments reduced to park footy pay whilst they are there.
they have an obligation to the club and their fans to play at their premium at ALL times. no excuses!!!

Add Cayless to that list....
Have you seen Caylo's stats. Last time I check he was 3rd in the NRL on metres gained, averaged 29 tackles a game and has won a MOM already this year. While we can place a question mark on his leadership and communication skills, I wouldn't question his ability that's for sure.

Cayless' performance against Newcastle ranks amongst the best I've seen.

Unless the come under the top thirty players, they will come under the second tier salary cap, and I would suspect a lot of coaches would prefer not to use that up too quickly.

LOL dude, he played well but f**k me, if that was one of the best individual performances you've seen then maybe you need to watch more games:lol:

Yes he played well, but Finchs game against the dogs was 3 times better then that, it was a game expected from a guy on $300,000 a year, pity he doesn't play like that more often.

Maybe the flip side to that question should be "Is asking a park footy or under 20's player to play first grade too big of a step?" My own opinion is yes, the reason coaches seem unwilling to drop players is because there doesn't seem to be obvious replacement for them.

I agree with last comment about Cayless' leadership. I think someone with some passion needs to take the reigns like Hindmarsh or Finch. Parra needs to Man Up! They'll come good though they always do..
