Is the McGoldrick the best centre we have available ?

After watching the weekends game you couldn't help but be impressed with the overall teams effort and result. The guys are definately playing better and they seem to be happier under SR, which is a good thing. Being happy, not being under SR I mean.

However 2 things jumped out at me and I assume to everyone else.

The first thing was how slow Covell was on the wing. I think we can put up with this when you consider he is a very talented football player even though a bit on the slow side for a winger. His goal kicking and other talents make up for it.

The second thing is not so easy to get my head around and that is why is McGoldrick still in the team ? He continues to show week in and week out that he is a defensive liability. Teams will continue to target him due to his slowness is lateral movement and his poor decision making in defence.

Since im based in Melbourne I dont get to see any of the lower grade matches, but surely McGoldrick isn't the best option we have, is he ?

Who are the other in line and what are their strong and weak points ? are they far off being able to handle the big time ?

I can feel it my water that this is going to be a good year for the Sharks.

I'm not sure if there are currently better options in the centres for Zeus to be replaced.

He's not that slow, you got to remember the heat factor on Sunday..He still nearly ran around Patten in the latter part of the first half.

I think Covell just looks slow due to his size and running style.
He's not exactly as pedestrian as some of you boys make out!!

McGoldrick isn't going that badly. He isn't getting much ball, as Vagana and Bails are on fire on the right hand side, so all the attack goes that way.

It looked like Covell wwas trying to second-guess Patten, which was why he didn't look overly fast.

I'm sure when he puts the foot down there's a lot more speed there

Goldy did put on a try saver in the first half and did smash SBW. In fact I have a feelling he was looking for him.

Why don't you tell us who the better option is MS. Easy to define the problem. Hard to define the solution.

Perhaps you could tell us whether you think McGoldy is our best option? Some of us used to like hearing your opinion on Footy.

If I had all the answer McSharkie I wouldn't need or want this forum.

The reason I posted the note as it says within is that I don't have the answers as I dont see the lower grade games. Thats why I am asking some of the more geographically superior supporters who get to the lower grade games.

I couldn't see any benefit to putting Simmons in the centres and I think Covell is doing a great job out on the wing. All I can comment on is the team that I see on FOXTEL each week.

So one more time, what I am asking is are there any prospects from the lower grades to fill what I (yes only me at this stage) see to be the sole defensive problem in our backline.

Maybe its just my perception, maybe there really isnt a problem and the backline is fine. What does everyone else think ?

i was told by a graded player that beau scott is highly thought of, i have only seen him play once and cant comment.

maybe some of the other posters have a better idea or even the st george visitors to this site may know more.

vince mellars came with big wraps but hasnt lived up to them and may end up in the pack.

geez sorry mcsharkie

i think we have a weakness in outside backs

mcgoldy is probably the lesser of 10 evils

i dont really like the niggle he tries on

but as a footy player he does do some things right

but he is no ET or sparkles

McGoldrick was our best centre last year.

This year he had a good game against the panthers, set up a good try for covell against Parra and has been a rock in defence. I don't see how you people say he can't tackle when clearly every week he comes up with the goods... He has had one bad miss this season and that was on Lolesi who he ran down and got in the end.

I know he doesn't like the wing but maybe a move outside of Vagana would get him more ball and room(the space simmons gets and does nothing with)
