There is pretty well universal agreement that our attack is useless. Ricky has said constantly that they are working on it and yet nothing has changed.
For the past few seasons we have not been a free flowing team. When we have looked good in attack is when our forwards have dominated yardage and have offloaded to create second phase play. We are not a team who is going to run around other teams. Our lateral shifts (the few that we see) are generally poor, passing lacks precision and runners do not hit holes. This season, for the first third of the comp our forwards dominated yardage yet they appear to be instructed not to offload. Last year Thommo offloaded at will and created plenty of opportunities. Gallen also has the ability to promote the ball. None of our props are offloading - they just are battering rams. Bird is constantly looking for support that never comes.
IMO for us to improve our attack the forwards need to be instructed to look for the offload through the line. Watts, Anderson, Simmons need to be running off the shoulder of Thommo, Gallen, Ross, Bird and looking for seond phase play. It is clear that our halves lack creativity so waiting for them to put on plays won't work. Our kicking game rarely threatens. Our strength is our pack and they are the key to providing some spark.
The present game plan of safety first hit it up for five, kick and back our defence has enabled us to be a competitive but very mediocre team. It is deisnged to win 12-10 by boring the other team into submission but it is not working. So, for us to go anywhere we need the forwards to be looking for the offload and the backs to be hitting close holes looking for short passess to bust the line.
Come on Ricky time to let the big boppers play some footy.....
