Is there a Premiership Favourite?

Hi people,

I was just wondering can any team really be the premiership favourite currently. By the end of next round we will be roughly a quarter of the way into the comp, but for mine there are various reasons why there is no real comp favourite.
The top 4 sides currently were all lower odds for the wooden spoon pre-season than the premiership. But a quick run through the teams lends me to think there is no clear premiership threat.

1. Canberra are unbeaten, so there form must be viewed as the best. I don't know if they have really played an in form team yet. The roosters was a good game for them, jason smith has been an instant impact for each of his teams after the dogs, the eels, hull and raiders, but he also is regularly off the field. If he can stay fit then they are a threat in my mind.

2. Sharks, well minus the loss to manly when kimmorley was suspended and I think their form looks good. They were lucky to get the eels, but did the bulldogs well and smashed probably the most consistent team till last round the cowboys.

3. Manly, well looked great for 3 rounds, good win against storm, then had a bye and were smacked by the winless dragons.

4. Tigers, well lost to the eels and looked average, had a bye then scraped home against both last years grand finalists, and beat warriors well. Great young halves and some good youngsters coming through.

5. Storm, well probably have been the standout team, but then have been beaten well by manly and more so by penrith, just another contender.

6. Broncos, well what can you say, flogged one week, flogged someone else the next.

7. Cowboys, like I said very consistent till last week, was it just a hick up.

8. Warriors, well really if you look at their games they are almost the most consistent team, haven't been hammered and beat the bunnies well, but solid.

9. Panthers, well did nothing for 4 weeks really, although were ok against the eels in what was a pretty good match. Then gave it to the storm.

10. Rabbits, hammered the eels and knights, were smashed by the warriors and two tough games against roosters and raiders.

11. Bulldogs, were great in round 1, but have lost personal and haven't fired a shot since.

12. Roosters, Without freddy they currently have that X factor to get them across the line, still plenty of good players, they just need to learn to play without freddy.

13. Eels, well once again no real form line, were solid against tigers, terrible against souths and brisbane, but should have beaten the sharks and were very good against penrith. God knows, and I am a fan of theirs.

14. Dragons, were bad for 4 rounds, then snapped back in last week, have heaps of talent.

15. Knights, well injuries galore, but have to be wooden spoon favs.

But of that lot who do you pick, if you had to put your house on a team who would it be and why?

For mine, probably the cowboys, they look very good across the park, Big pack, and good bench forwards. Have Norton and sheppard to return but have no other major injury worries unlike other sides (perhaps Ty Williams). But they would be current comp favs. What about you?

for the 1st time there is not one clear favourite...you couldnt say "team XZY" is fav without some drawbacks to their team.

Melb...good at home, crap away
Roosters...just not executing
Broncos...too unpredictable
Panthers...injury plagued
Dogs...see panthersm plus contract problems with players
Dragons...which team will show up?
Cowboys...have to start winning away from home.

Im sticking with my predication before the season started.

Top two teams will be penrith and the Bulldogs....and I say top wtwo teams as is "The best two teams in the finals series".

They will be followed by the likes of Brisbane, the Storm and the Roosters.

After that, its anyone guess....it could be any combination of teams apart from Souths and the Knights.

I dont think anyone outside of that top five has a REAL shot at the title.

So yeah....a third of the competition. :D

It's a tough competition to tell you the truth, the sides we predicted to fire this year havent done it so far. Bulldogs have only won 1 game which is a bad start to the premiers, but are missing their best pack of forwards, O'Meley, Mason and add to that Maitua. Also Sonny Bill is a huge loss for them so its gonna be difficult for them to turn it around without him, but in saying that they shouldnt rely too much on him. There's plenty of talent.

Canberra and Wests Tigers who I thought were wooden spoon contenders have doubted me so far this season. They've improved heaps and who wouldve thought after 5 rounds Canberra are unbeaten and on top of the competition. And Wests Tigers winning 3 in a row and knocking off the two grand finalists in consecutive weeks.

Cronulla have also improved, they are unbeaten at home this year and looking alright. Cowboys and Melbourne are still there, but will need to improve away from home.

Manly have done the same, and are probably the improvers of 2005.

The disappointments have been Dragons and Parramatta. A lot of people expected them to go good, Dragons with all their representitive players and Parramatta with all their major signings. A bad start for them both, I dont know exactly whats going to happen afterwards or whether they can improve during the season.

So its hard to tell whos the competition's favourite at the moment. I'd say after Origin time we'll find out. One of the sides will come home strongly.

The question is which one will it be?

I would have said Melbourne until the panthers got the better of them. Now I wouldn't have a clue. Sharks have been pretty good as have the tigers but it is hard to put them as favourites due to past years. At the moment I would say Sharks are playing the best.

Yeah sharks have been the best team so far this year beat dogs with willams, full strength boys, penrith and the eels which are pretty shit. Lost to manly but without key personel that is why we lost. But also canberra have been good but have seemd to play every team when they are out of form they have been the luckeyst team in years.

you mean saints are no longer benchmarks? ;-)

According to Big Bad Shark it looks like Cronulla might be. And Luke Covell might very well be the best player to ever lace on a boot. He apparently has some competition from Gallen tho, and Peachey, and maybe even Kimmorley. But as for the rest of teams, they've got no hope apparently ... theyve got too many cats in their teams ;-)

Dont knock gallen no better lock this year in form. But yeh he dosent deserve a test jumper. He should be in the city/country though.

after looking at the odds to win the gf, it's still hard to believe that the cowboys are on the same line of betting as the roosters. but they deserve to be there though. they are playing some brilliant footy (last week aside).

Bulldogs and Panthers should be the favourites. The bulldogs first half against the dragons is still the best half of football by a team this season IMO. The dragons didn't really play that bad, but that loss put a huge dent in their confidence. Anyway The dogs will make a dash in back half of the season and should finish top 4 comfortably.

The Panthers have been losing without playing horribly. They have the best team on paper IMO but they need luck with injuries.

city country no problem, i hope he makes it, but test football? would have been controversy central.
