... you've never heard of???

Can u believe one man drummed on all these hits? And that's just the top ten hits. Sure some of them are just him being paid to not stuff it up, but he must be one of the gretest of all time judging by his resume.

I started researching his sound after hearing Simon and Garfunkel's The Boxer. Big echoey crashing sounds like Thor striking a distant anvil, and creating thunder....

Not exactly the hardest songs to drum..

$10 says Tre Cool from Green Day would own him in a drum off.

Byron Mackinnon is where it's at for drumming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Um....Byron is good but from that same scene (SoCal and OC) also came Josh Freese. Freese is a sesh drummer even though his main gig is in the Vandals. Josh Freese own everybody in drumming circles!

And I'm suprised you didn't say Andy Strachan!

Damn.

I have a hell of a lot of those songs.

I see he worked for Phil Spector in 1963, then...... he didn't. lol

Lorne Greene ?

LOL@ Lorne Greene. Did he sing until he was Hoss?

Noticed Hal also drummed on tracks by the Monkees and Byrds - who had excellent drummers. And Karen Carpenter drummed too. But Hal got the gig over her.

I think that was from a previous era, where session musos would be booked to play, as members of bands had no status or clout?

Producers records, not band records. Maybe like booking an orchestra or big band?

hal drummed on 35000 songs, some of the greatest songs ever recorded. He sounds competent but not innovative. Crisp clean precision.

And of course S&Gs The Boxer was pure Spectoresque. He may not have worked with Phil later but he learnt how to do it.

Speaking of S&G, Only Living boy In new York is featured in the new movie Garden State. Probably the only song of theirs I'd consider burning onto a blank CD.

I heard its a song about drug smuggling.

bill stevenson of descendents and black flag fame rips both josh freese and byron from pennywise. bill is super fast on all aspects of drumming. i'd have bill the drum ogre in my band before any drummer.

Bill is a good drummer

bill is a great drummer and whips byron for speed and technical ability. they both have some pretty awesome fills but bills are so much more crisper and faster. also the drummer from rise against is pretty handy behind the skins.

Canadian Lorne Greene talked through those songs - setting the precedent for William Shatner's fine recordings years later.

Those hardcore/punk guys are ok but they're pretty pale by comparison to guys like Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy), Pete Sandoval (Morbid Angel), Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Von Blomberg (Mayhem, Arcturus, Covenant), Gene Hoglan or several others in the Death/Black metal scene.
