Is Thorman a Saint?

It's in the papers here in England that Chris Thorman will walk away from the Eels and the NRL by signing for St Helens until the end of the season to cover for Sean Long's 3 month suspension for betting on his side to lose.

It doesn't seem to be working out for Thorman in the NRL from what I've heard. Any particular reasons, such as playing behind your lame pack, or just a lack of ability? The lad looked extremely good for England reserves against Australia last year, whats he done wrong?

Anyone heard anything to substantiate these rumours?

First of all, you're a fool.

Our pack is not the best in the NRL, but it is a very strong one. We always go forward and give our halves space.

Secondly, I think he just cannot adjust. The defensive pressures of NRL teams is just very suffocating. His defence, which I noticed when he played in England, was strong. Here, it's quite weak.

Also his overall game is just not up to scratch - he's OK, not brilliant.

That's a very interesting story Fairleigh, although could be just rumours (as per usual).

I think the problem is Thorman needs time, alot of time. It took Morley about a full season before he fully adjusted to the pace of the NRL and I feel it will take Thorman the same time. Problem is, I don't think Parramatta are prepared to wait that long. Hence the massive offer of $400-450k for Matt Orford. The club has about 14 players coming off contract this year (Thorman included) and they will be cleaning the decks to make way for some high profile signatures.

To be honest he has not really got a chance in the NRL playing along side Dykes and Witt, he is not a greedy player and may be he needs to be, or he could have received instructions to play second fiddle. He has got a good kicking game, a good step and can run from dummy half, as for defence, no better and no worse than Dykes or Witt. If he leaves it would be a shame that he did not make the most of the chance he was given.

Any particular reason's you ask????....... yeah .........one.
The coach won't give him a go.
Thorman shows more heart than half of our forwards put together, yet, as has always been the case, Brian just can't help playing his favourites.

Thorman would succeed in the NRL GIVEN HALF A CHANCE.
Change of clubs would do him the world of good.

I don't know why Tony Smith wasted his time.

Oops sorry, phrased that wrong. I wasn't saying your pack were lame, I haven't seen you play at all this year, I was asking whether a weak pack was to blame, as it often is when half backs struggle.

Oh, oops.

That's cool.

I thought you were attacking my Eels. I'm like a terrier - love 'em to death and would defend to the death.

But yeah - I actually like Thorman. He's a good player.

It's just that it seems as though it would take him a while to adjust. And we aren't travelling too well, so time is a commodity we cannot afford.

To be honest when thorma did play our pack was rather weak, we like to call it a lack of spirit which they have turned around, so that did have a little to do with it.

Yes it was unfortunate that the 2 games Thorman actually started at half was when the team was in a terrible slump. I thought he played poorly against the Dragons but was much better against the Tigers. He has shown glimpses of brilliance in both games but just needs more time to develop consistency. I think he has the potential to be a great player in time but I just don't know if the club is prepared to wait.

I'd like to see how he goes in first grade now that the team is playing much more determined and committed football. We might finally see the true Thorman.

Then why would the club bother investing in him if they (ie HE....SMITH) won't give him a decent chance.

A weak pack HAS been to blame. Hell, even Andrew Johns struggles when his forwards fail to dominate.
Can you do us a favour Fairleigh??
Any club want to take a lame fairy forward off our hands for a large transfer fee?? i.e. Michael Vella??

Offers welcome.

Doubt it, we have some of the world's best at our disposal. We have Keiron Cunningham, now getting back to his imperious best, Paul Sculthorpe the worlds best loose forward, two very, very solid props in Nick Fozzard and Keith Mason, both future GB players and Lee Gilmour and Chris Joynt in the second row. Joynt is retiring this season, so perhaps we could accomodate an NRL deadbeat there, but we have another superstar future GB player in Jon Wilkin who I would prefer to be allowed to grow into Sculthorpe's replacement from there.

Interesting theory. That would mean Thorman walking out now (ie before June 30) to play the run in to the English finals. St Helens seemed to do alright without Long this weekend, which suggests the halves spot is not a huge emergency for them?

I think Thorman is taking a while to settle in, which may be the Super League to NRL adjustment thing, but I think it's more a case of not having been allowed to develop a partnership in the halves with anyone yet. Hopefully he'll see out the season down under and have been able to benefit from doing so.

The choice to crown Dykes our favoured halfback #-o this year has meant a lot of fiddling around of players out of their usual positions (Wags 5/8, Witt 5/8, Thorman?, Tim Smith?, Mateo?) and only Dykes seems sure of what position he is going to play week-to-week. Hopefully the rest of the season will see more stability in our halves?

the story may of surfaced before Saturday night and since then we've lost our current playmaker for an extended period which means we may be reluctant to release him.

Farleigh sure he would look good in a substandard competition. Im sure Paul Carige plays like Brad Fittler to you guys over there.

His personal performances have been even more inconsistent than the halves combinations. I understand that he is used to being chopped and changed between halfback and 5/8 over the last couple of seasons, so I don't think that's the problem. I think it is actually his personal form that is particularly inconsistent. He's got great potential and I'd love him to succeed, but he really does need to be more consistent if he wants to be remembered in the NRL.
