Although its disappointing, it's still a wonderful effort by the young Dragons. Most are only SG Ball and HM graduates this year. Probably a little bit of "deer in the headlights" at the start of the game but actually won the 2nd half 28-14, which will set them up well for next year. They didn't throw in the towel either.

Overall a hearty well done lads.

Herbert still not signed for next year? I can accept Garrack not getting another contract and it is plain Sele has been stamped 'not to be pursued' but the loss of Herbert would be disappointing.

ISP Dragons earn preliminary final berth

A last-gasp try to fullback-turn-centre Patrick Herbert has seen the St George-Illawarra Dragons snatch a 28-26 win over the Newtown Jets – the win securing a berth in a Preliminary Final fixture for the Red V, in a fortnight's time.

Trailing by eight points with less than 15 minutes to play, the Dragons overturned the deficit courtesy of tries to Adam Clune and Herbert – both on the back of the influence and kicking nous of experienced halfback, Darren Nicholls.

Herbert's try sent the Dragons to an unassailable front, and consequently, Newtown into a Semi-Final fixture with Mounties at Jubilee Oval next weekend.

The fast-finishing Dragons were slow out of the blocks, and only four minutes had passed before Newtown found their first points. Experienced winger Matt Evans was the first to score, and the four-pointer came on the back of a slick shift from the Jets' backs.

Kyle Flanagan made no mistake from the left-hand touchline, sending the Jets out to a 6-0 lead.

Shaun Sauni-Esau hit back for the Dragons just five minutes later, the winger capping a peach of a pass from late-inclusion Jai Field to touchdown.

Nicholls, alike Flanagan, was flawless with his first conversion attempt of the afternoon and levelled the scores at six.

Back-to-back tries to the Jets' Briton Nikora (17th) and Evans (25th) had the Jets out by 10 points, but again the Dragons found a quick reply.

Playing off the interchange bench despite wearing the No.6, Adam Clune stepped into his familiar play-making role and delivered a short ball at the line to send Reuben Garrick in to score.

Nicholls converted to lessen the margin to four points, before Clune again turned provider to hand Sauni-Esau a first-half double.

Nicholls' joy from the tee came to an end with his third attempt on goal, and the scores were locked at 16 heading into the sheds.

At the resumption, a Dragons penalty gave the 'hosts' the lead, as Nicholls pointed to the posts from in front to send his side to an 18-16 front.

But again, the Jets, as they had done for most of the match, re-found the lead.

Reubenn Rennie went over to score (56th) before William Kennedy's try (66th) again had the Jets out to a healthy, eight-point margin.

But with under 10 minutes to play, up stepped the experiences Nicholls.

The veteran No.7 sent a last tackle bomb spiralling towards the wing of Rennie, who spilled the ball to hand the Dragons gift possession.

Clune – having had a hand in two of his team's tries – took the ball on the first play off the scrum and did it all himself to score. Nicholls converted, cutting the Jets' lead to just two with 5 minutes to play.

Back in 'good ball' areas, the Dragons looked to their marquee signing – Nicholls threw up another floating kick towards Rennie's wing, who again dropped the Steeden.

Trailing through off the kick, Herbert scooped up the ball in one motion and planted down to score the match-winner.

Nicholls' shot on goal mattered little, and at the sound of the full-time siren, the Dragons had reason to cheer – Mat Head's securing a direct passage through to a Week Three Preliminary Final, while the Jets were consigned to a Semi-Final clash with Mounties at Jubilee Oval.

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA 28 (S Sauni-Esau 2 R Garrick A Clune P Herbert tries D Nicholls 4 goals) bt NEWTOWN 26 (M Evans 2 B Nikora R Rennie W Kennedy tries K Flanagan 3 goals)

Elimination Finals - Sydney Roosters v St George Illawarra Dragons
Panthers Stadium
Sunday 2 September, 3.45pm

The Sydney Roosters blew the St George Illawarra Dragons off the park with a massive 40-28 victory that will see them advance to Week Two of the finals.

It was a simple try to start proceedings for the Roosters, with Treymain Spry finishing a left-to-right shift with players in motion to stroll over just two minutes in.

A contender for try of the year across any grade in all competitions came next from Lachlan Lam. He bursted through the defence from deep inside his own half and beat half of the Dragons team as he drifted towards the corner-post before stepping off his left foot to fool three defenders and score.

Adam Pompey beat two players to score a skilful try in the corner, before Kenese Kenese increased the Roosters lead to a commanding 22-0 when he crashed through.

The Dragons crossed the line but the try was disallowed for a forward pass, before Lam was at it again with a perfect cut-out ball to Asu Kepaoa who scored in the corner.

Dragons got the perfect start to the second half with Luke Gale scoring adjacent to the posts, but Spry kept the margin at a fair distance when he drew in his opposition centre and passed for his winger to stroll over untouched.

NSW Under-20s Origin representative Matheson Johns showed strength and determination to burrow his way over for the Dragons, before a left-to-right shift was finished by the fast feet of Tyran Wishart, bringing the deficit back to 30-18.

The Dragons were so close to scoring under the posts, but the despite defence of the Roosters held them up. It turned out to be a 12-point-turnaround, as McKenzie Baker made an 80 metre run before Adam Pompey finished the try.

A brilliant kick-off from Tristan Sailor got his side the ball back and Gale immediately scored to give the Dragons half a chance with seven minutes remaining, but it would be Pompey to once again to score for the Roosters against the run of play.

The game finished with a brutal big hit by Tagiolupe Tivalu, but it was deemed illegal and he was sent from the field, before Sailor scored the Dragons final try of the season when he pounced on a grubber underneath the posts.

The fact that a club who are meant to have no juniors beat us typifies what we have become. The RoRters have no juniors.....ohhhh wait.....

I finally got to watch the ISP on Foxtel last night
IMO my observations
Host , Herbert and Robinson FG ready
Should of been used more this year
Robinson is really good
Sele ( I believe he is gone but with good coaching could be in the 17 )
Kerr , reminds me of the big tall Penrith ( ex cowboys prop ) again with good coaching could press the 17)
Field - seems to be maturing - would be great in the top 17 - certainly has X factor
Has a great bullet pass ( it’s a shame McNoidea put him in the 17 last week and didn’t give him a shot )
Clune - very impressive ( I don’t no much about him but he had a great game )
He too has a great bullet pass
Also the winger SSE who scored two tries did everything right
Nicholls the half - very steady - gets the job done
Garrick / Masters still green but they are both young
In general , Head has them playing an exciting brand of footy , and the players seems very happy .
You could see that at full time and also when a try was scored .

Jersey Flegg team had what about 5-6 players missing from their best team, with some elevated. Roosters missing 1 for sure, maybe 2. Johns out there strapped up also.

They recruit heavily, we keep players at home as our policy and recruit less than say 5-8 years ago, as well. We changed for a variety of reasons, but partly because we ended up a factory for other clubs in various positions without the NRL deciding to reward development.

These things run in cycles. You can’t say that having Jersey Flegg strong is more important than developing depth for first grade. Jersey Flegg is a competition for the 17-19 year olds that aren’t being dragged towards first grade through ISP. Also worth noting that the club has been reducing games played and leaving under 18s players to finish their school football.

Yes, hard to put the boot in on this . I remember also when the Rorters brought a Jersey Flegg comp ! Had Soward etc in it and scored a record number of points and I think were undefeated but don't know what it achieved. It's a good thing that this comp is not televised as it was making superstars of players that were very untested.

Perrett, Soliola and Soward and not much else. That being said our 2005 team produced something like 7 or 8 first graders.

There’s a difference between the structure of the competition and what the people responsible end up doing with it. All the work clubs like ours did prior to 2008 to find a new direction (lower grades were a mess the previous couple of years) was thrown away by greed at NRL and Fox Sports. The worst part of all was changing from 35 minute halves to 40 minutes. Most of the criticism came directly from that simple mistake and poorly communicating what had happened to reserve grade with players heading overseas. They tried to make it another product. As if a college football competition could convince people who were still stuck in old ways.

I’m with Phil Gould on this one. I expect to see a significant drop in talent in coming years with the current arrangements. AFL are looking at ways to take up this ground.

Hard job for the boys to make the GF without Lomax and Sele. Bulldogs with many players dropping back from NRL duty.

I feel very confident that the Dragons have the team to win this one.Herbert in for Lomax - many on here were rating Herbert higher than Lomax, Field to fullback - Millward predicted field to be our first grade fullback in 2018. No major surprises here so in my opinion, the Dragons should have a comfortable win this Sunday.

Dont bet on it. We only just beat the Dogs by 1 last time and they have got all their guns back who qualify
