And a huge congratulations to our reserve grade side for taking out the 2017 title.

A win on the big day next week V PNG will top it off in front of a big building crowd at 3:40 p.m.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Penrith Panthers have won the 2017 Intrust Super Premiership NSW Grand Final after holding off a gutsy Wyong Roos outfit 20-12 at Leichhardt Oval.

The Panthers dominated the early exchanges as they threatened the Roos’ goal line with some threatening attacking raids, but were unable to draw first blood as the Roos’ defence held strong.

An infringement in the ruck just moments later gifted the Roos an easy two points, with Mitchell Cornish making no mistake with the conversion to give the Roos a handy 2-0 lead after just 10 minutes.

An array of handling errors from the Roos gifted the Panthers valuable field position in the hope of claiming the maiden try, and a cross-field kick landed in the arms Maika Sivo, but the speedster was put into touch by the scrambling Wyong defence.

Panthers held momentum for a majority of the opening 20 minutes but a quick burst down the blind side for Wyong nearly resulted in a try to Luke Sharpe, but the dynamic fullback was brought down five metres out from the line.

Panthers five-eighth Jerome Luai looked to have broken the deadlock after he support a contest between Luke Sharpe and his counterpart following a mid-field bomb, but the referee ruled a knock-on in the process so the Roos were given a reprieve.

Wyong bounced back from the early onslaught with Joseph Manu held up over the line, but they eventually found the breakthrough as Cornish laid a perfect pass for Brock Gray who crossed in the left-hand corner.

The Roos held onto a 6-0 lead with the Panthers threatening in the closing stages, and a deft kick from Nicholls somehow landed in the arms of Sivo to score their maiden try of the contest.

Nicholls converted to bring the games level at 6-all at half-time.

Panthers got off to the perfect start in the second half with some strong defensive efforts putting them straight on the attack, and centre Tony Satini wasted little time as he barged his way over to give his side a narrow four-point lead.

An attempted 40/20 kick from Nicholls was initially saved by a desperate Luke Sharpe, but winger Christopher Centrone was quickly pushed into touch before offloading back on the inside for a waiting Corey Waddell who strolled over for their third unanswered try.

Nicholls nailed the conversion from the sideline to take a 20-6 lead with just 20 minutes remaining in the contest.

The Panthers were looming for their fourth consecutive try and another cross-field kick from Nicholls found Sivo who offloaded to Jed Cartwright for a crucial four-pointer.

Just when the game looked all but over, Joseph Manu showed his class with a perfectly timed cut-out pass to John Tuivasa-Sheck who crashed his way over in the corner, with Paul Momirovski converting from the sideline to close the lead to eight points with just less than 10 minutes remaining.

Manu was having a brilliant second half and an early ball to the elusive centre saw him make a sharp break before flick passing to Tuivasa-Sheck, who brushed off a would-be defender before passing back to Manu but the scrambling Panthers defence held him up over the line.

Despite some last-ditch efforts from the Roos to salvage a potential comeback, the Panthers were able to hold strong and eventually come away with a valiant 20-12 victory.

Penrith Panthers 20 (M Sivo, J Cartwright, T Satini, C Waddell tries; D Nicholls 2 goals) def Roos 12 (B Gray, J Tuivasa-Sheck tries; P Momirovski, M Cornish goals)

I've been keenly watching him throught the times the Panthers ISP were on Fox this season, and I'm quite sure he has what it takes to be a complete first grader, whether with us or somewhere else.

He is the kind of player that will be as strong and as entertaining as Semi.
If you got him training full-time with the FG squad and have him buddy up with Josh Mansour in the gym you would have a beast of a player.

It would be a tough call with Sivo and DWZ, but I think the Fijian has a lot more upside. This is the problem with basically having your entire squad tied down long term.

I will put it out there. I have seen DWZ play centre twice and he has gone ok. I think he wasted on the wing long term.
If Sivo is up to it. Try DWZ at left centre, Sivo wing and Peach back to the bench. Peach's form at centre this year was hit and miss. particular miss when his centre opponent was quicker than him

Worth trying to fit Sivo in the team if he is worth it. At least worth a look at the combo in the trials next year.

Blake though?

If Whare stays at right centre I’d move Blake to the left first, see how that goes.

I'd keep Blake at right. He goes better on the right.
Whare would be the one to miss out.

If they want to start with Blake and Whare as the main centres next year fine. But if Sivo stays and is good as everyone says I want him in the side by mid year.
If this guy is the next semi we need to get him in the side and tough calls have to be made.
I am not convinced on Whare since his return from injury or Peach's form this year. No guarantee DWZ would fire at centre but its worth looking at.He has done ok in the 2 games I have seen him play in the centres. I feel he could offer more than just being a winger.
If that is a sticking point for Sivo re-signing that our backs are set. I would be saying that to his management. 'There is a path to first grade if he is good enough, don't think our backline is set in stone'
I love Mansour and would not be moving him on.
Just my thoughts on how we could get Sivo in the team.

I concur.
But maybe the reason we haven't re-signed him is all the other clubs have been weighing in with their $$$.

I still can’t get over us giving Whare a 5 year deal. I don’t care how good a value it was that’s one of the biggest bone head moves I’ve seen.

People need to be realistic. First grade is a big step up from what he's been playing. He's also relatively new to the game. I'm not too sure it'd be making any drastic changes to get him into the side from the start of the season.

I agree on that. Merely throwing out ideas to get Sivo into the team if he is worth it and how not to lose our wingers in Mansour & DWZ.
Maybe the chance of grading him comes mid next season?
I did say it wouldn't bother me if they started with Whare & Blake as our centres. But its worth strongly considering combos in the trials rather than just leaving DWZ on the wing. Griffin seems to have DWZ done as a winger period. He has played Will Smith & Whare over him at fullback when the spot has been open through injury.

Just recently? Stew Moses told me just 2 days ago that he was still off contract.

Off the NSWRL

website http://www.nswrl.com.au/news/2017/0..._.af_intrust-super-premiership-nsw_news1.html

“It’s good to see that a player like him with talent can get an opportunity – and Penrith are going to get the full value from him.”

Having already impressed at Intrust Super Premiership NSW level, Sivo has earned a contract to train alongside the Panthers’ NRL squad in preparation for the 2018 season. It will be a major challenge for the 23-year-old – who had never done weights training until earlier this year, let alone the gruelling task of an NRL pre-season – but it offers him the chance to take his game to even greater heights.

Contract to train alongside?

That article is worded oddly. Makes it sound like it’s just a contract to train, not to play.

We had a few like that to start last year. I guess when the cap is finalised we will know the numbers exactly. As long as he is with us the rest will be sorted in time
