He got rejected by union last time. He was talking to the Waratahs but the ARU publicy stated they weren't interested in him and refused to top up his contract. So ended up re-signing with the Eels and very publicly embarrassed.

how was that embaressing for him? connelly approached him, publicly stated so and commented on what he'd bring to the tahs, connelly asked the aru for a top up, and got turned down.

the only people who should be embaressed about that is the waratahs and the aru recruitment process

JUst a comment, and good luck to Eric if he gets the big bucks, I understand that he has a real issue with his back, and that at times he is a week to week proposition.

We should not wish him anything other than a big thanks if he goes, and a cheer if he stays.

Good luck Eric whatever the decision

Totally agree.

Oh - and IF he goes - that's another 250k to spend for next season

It might just mean that we don't back-end Tahu's deal? Or it might be that we could use some of it to bring in another player (JayCay?!?)

This Grothe early-release rumour just hasn't gone away over the past few months...

The club responded to the Cayless rumours by publically denying them, but haven't done so with these Grothe rumours.

I guess signing Tahu without needing to lose any other players wasn't quite an accurate summation by Osborne after all?

HUH?

Where did Grothe say that he wanted to go to Union because the club needed to ditch someone to fit under the cap?

All along it's been said that we don't need to lose any other players, but the article states that Eric is thinking about going to Japanese rugby in order to cash in and hit paydirt in his last few years before retiring.
The respect he is held in at the Eels means that they won't begrudge him this opportunity.

How on earth do you suddenly deduce that we had to lose him and that Osborne has been spinning porky pies?

I didn't say Osborne had lied... I just said that it turns out that six first grade contracted backs don't fit into five positions after all. But in time, looking back, it will be seen that for 2010 we brought in Tahu to the backline, and lost Grothe.

It's been discussed on here at great length that one back was expected to seek greener pastures rather than stare down the barrel at playing for Wenty or being converted to a forward. Seems Guru is that player looking around, that's all I'm saying.

ok - but Osborne never said we'd get all 6 on the park in the 5 positions at once :p

His comments were more to do with answering the question of: "Does someone NEED to leave in order for Tahu to fit under the salary cap"
And the answer was "No - it's fine".

Much like his comments about Hayne re-signing "he's sweet" - saying that it would happen!

Srry for misunderstanding what you were trying to say!!

No worries, sorry for my poor wording first time around!

You're right on the "need to" bit... I now remember he chose his language very carefully.

Please Manly, sign Tim Smith and get rid of Matt Orford.....
Why do you want them to get rid of Matt Orford? They're worse off with him in their team. Please don't suggest we should sign him. I'd prefer Thurston
