It is now time for Richard Becht to earn his keep

With the Warrior's opening 2005 game now only a few days away it is time for the much revered Richard Becht (Media / PR man ) to earn his keep. He should be hounding all of the media - papers, tv, radio, print with articles galore. This morning's NZ Herald sports section was a shocker and I am sure that a RL story from the Warriors would have been welcomed.
I hope that radio sport, The Rock, Hauraki and other 'blokey' stations are saturated with Warrior's stories (positive ones). This also applies to TV shows such as Holmes (if there are still viewers), Sports cafe, the various Sky programmes etc.
I look forward to some big RL styories in the NZ media this week.

I was hoping for some TV coverage tonight after the team was named, but I guess I missed it ... :? Although from memory last year the teams were usually named on a Tuesday afternoon, and Wednesdays were the normal "media days" at Ericsson for all the interviews, etc.

I've got a nasty feeling that the media are going to hang back until the Warriors have "proven" themselves again. They shouldn't, but they probably will.

The Warriors are still getting what feels like a reasonable amount of coverage.

Radio Sport & other TRN stations i've managed to catch had decent coverage of the pre-season. We'll see.

I kind of agree PDB.

I personally emailed Richard Becht a couple of months back, just with a query from a budding sports journo as to what avenues there are to get into league coverage. Didn't get a razoo back. Not like the good old days when the players would email back, you'd expect the media/PR division to respond though. Maybe I'm just a number, like the rest of us?

They could have seriously hyped up Peter Sterling's appointment, but you know, there's been nothing on the Warriors site. Quite typical. I really think that site is dreadful. Personally, I'd put a big effort into that and getting positive stories out to the media - you can get them onside with a good solid effort, but you can get them even quicker offside by saying nothing and letting stories fester. I think the Vinnie Anderson saga encapsulated that perfectly - the club officially said nothing, and allowed the stories to fester when all they needed was an article congratulating Vinnie on his performances, and a brief reason as to why there was a split. Not saying anything at all basically confirmed the Anderson version of the story.

Murray Deaker will give you a full run-down on sunday-am. He is the "bagging" man, and does a fair fist of it too, I might add. If you want fairy stories then that will happen after the game, when all rugby results come in with bad results.

Ive had dealings with Richard and must say, he seems to be doing what he is directed to do, without giving away too much.

They had a piece on 365 with a good interview with Kemp. He explained the selections saying that he has been here 5 seasons and never seen Stacey train that hard in a off season. He also said he is bloody nervous as he considers this his 1st game as head coach

Exactly DMM, he has to toe the party line or he joins all the others
who are not there anymore.

Cheers

I heard some PR coverage this morning stating that there would be a full colour pic of the team in Fridays hearld. THere also seems to be a postive feel in the media towards the Team (Maybe not the club). I cant wait for the game!!!!!!

To be fair (thanks Mad Butcher for this saying)...

Mr Deaker holds Becht in high praise. He believes that it was RB who was responsible for the NRL (then ARL) becoming popular in NZ. This was due to the fact that at the time RB was TVNZ sports director and as a result RL stories were always very prominent.

Show me a coach who doesn't in tht situation. At least Kemp hd the balls to admit a couple of players had been slack in the off-season although he didn't name names.

I reckon keeping it all low-key is the best approach till the seasons well under way & we see what the Warriors in 2005 are made of.
