The NRL has been around for about 14 years. All the teams playing in it (including those formed in 1908) are playing in a competition whose history goes back 14 years. The NRL was formed by a merger between the ARL and SuperLeague. The NRL wants historical legitemacy, and decided that it's history is a continuation of the ARL's, the part of the merger with the more substantial longevity. St George Illawarra was formed by a merger between St George and Illawarra. St George Illawarra's history is a continuation of St George's the merger partner with the longer and more substantial history. To me, the applied logic is identical. If one is acceptable, then the other must also be. If St George Illawarra have 1 premiership, I demand that the NRL stops appropriating the ARL's history as their own.
Only few teams have won an nrl title this is fact. The rest is history if we are gonna be like that.

In my humble opinion it matters not in the grand scheme of things. This latest premiership is the best achievement in the history of St George and the Illawarra.

We are the current champions of a national rugby league competition which includes a New Zealand team. A 16 team competition: 26 rounds, State of Origin duties + finals. Not even Brisbane can claim they have won this. For any club to come first during the regular rounds is a huge achievement... to win the finals is something that comes around very rarely.

With expansion around the corner, titles are only going to get tougher and rarer. We should focus less on the past and prepare for future challenges. I wanna knock Adelaide and Perth out of the finals in years to come. The records can show whatever they want as far as im concerened. My club has an immensely proud history, its supporters are the envy of other clubs, and its future is secure.

Saintsified quite rightly points out that the NRL has been a round since 1998 and yet claims all the NSWRL and ARL records.

The official line from the Dragons club journal recognises a TOTAL of 16 premierships with St George contributing 15 and the JV contributing the 16th. IMO, the 2010 premiership is as much Illawarra's as it is St George's.

People are allowed to talk about it. Personally I'm amused by the hypocrisy of the antagonists.

Yesterday you see the Foxsports team list saying established 1999. But this is after they rave on about history and tradition of the Charity Shield since 1982 and how many shields the Dragons have won.

At the grand final the NRL ground announcer declared it as our first premiership since 1979, and all the merchandise that says the same.

During the RL centenary year and World Cup, Dragons merchandise was coming out with 'established 1921' from the NRL. But then the NRL quietly hold an 'official' line of the Dragons JV being established in 1999 - while they themselves think they were established in 1908, despite the NRL being a JV formed in 1998.

They want bums on seats and viewers, they know people like tradition.

It's a fact that the NSWRL, ARL and NRL has a history of historical contradictions. But the NRL officialdom seem to stubbornly stick to the notion that the Dragons 16th is one area beyond negotiation.

But it's all so unneccessary. They can have history and records without the contradictions, just as other competitions have.

Well....when people throw it at me about us only having one Premiership, I simply ask them "How many Premierships have the Dragons won"?

The Dragons have won 16 - end of story. Would the Bulldogs or Roosters not count a Grand Final win because they were known as The Sydney Bulldogs, as opposed to Canterbury Bulldogs ? Or Sydney Roosters compared with eastern Suburbs ???

I find the NRL and media address the issue according to how it will pan out with whatever story they're panhandling at the time. You listen to the Grand Final call by boloody Rabbits....raving on about the great history this big Red V has............. 16 Premierships. End of story.:crazy:
