despite an announcement that it wouldnt be pulled until sunday

it seems some of the members criticisms of yesterday hit a raw nerve indeed and they canned it immediately

Nose, I really think you need to give up on the 'fans criticisms' idea, aside from the fact it is leading you to make some silly posts, it doesn't stand up to the basic logic test.

They are quite capable of banning individuals if they want to, they would not need to announce it, or justify it, its their board.

A club is facing legal expenses (at best) over one of its forums.

Virtually every other club has done the same thing and most of them before the sharks did.

Simple logic dictates that annoying members are not the problem as they have been there forever, litigation is.

fair points husky

i dont swallow it though

one only needs to listen to talk back radio to find far more litigious content every day

also i stand by the fact there is no episode in australian law were a forum owner has been held liable for a post on that forum

as there is no legal precedent a law would have to be raised to cover it

i think a lot of the current hysteria has been propagated by lots of groups of people

some moderators around the traps for example have been running around for months preaching doom and gloom unless they are made mightier and given more censorship control

as these people are going to the administration of clubs with their scare mongering in order to increase their little power bases they have frightened the clubs into the belief that legal action is immediately immanent

my 2 Cents husky

i know you have a different view

the club is doesn't know what they were doing on the forum or what they could and couldn't get away with. Tis a shame cause it was a fun place

A bit of both sides, I think. Millers is right that the moderators have been looking for more control - you can see that simply in the posts and threads that get deleted. But that on its own would not have brought them down.

The effect of certain people jumping up and down and mentioning (if only in passing) that legal action could be possible puts doubt in the mind of those with the power to get rid of it. I'm sure the board has enough legal knowledge to know that the chance of success of any litigation is very low. But they also know that they would have to incur legal costs to defend it first. I'm also sure our directors have seen enough of the inside of a courtroom in the last few years to last them a while. Given that everyone else seems to have lost their forums, you can understand why they decide it's just easier to pull the plug.

Disappointing but easier.

And the people who stand the most to gain from all the forums closing??

I think it would be the talk show hosts wouldn't it. Since with no forums the only place left to go for up to date info is the sports programs on radio, especially those that focus on footy.

And where did all this current stuff about litigation start rearing its head? I could be wrong but wasn't it on some call in to a Saturday league programme that got the ball rolling with the rleague.com forum closing pretty soon after it?

I could be wrong, maybe I've watched too many X-Files but maybe a broadcasters are rubbing their hands together in glee at whats happening to one of their competitive groups.

fair points PJ

but the complaint was about an article published on RLeague
the article was pulled
rleague tarted itself as a news source with news articles and that was abused

it is also interesting to note no legal action took place anyway

hmmm....not real sure mn ......

but my geuss would be that this John Brady bloke(or the nrl) is taking legal action against the warriors, for allowing such a message to be posted on their board....

Whoever it is though, they must have a super thin skin! Because that letter is so poorly written that its laughable .................

I've had dealings with John Brady and doubt that he would be instigating it.

But then again my conspiracy theory pops up again. John is the media manager, the NRL has a very tight deal with a radio station, maybe there's been some pressure applied to come down on these forums and force people back to the radio??
