No, but he has taken a side that came 4th last year even with the emergence of the flegg side to almost second last. He has decimated a side with poor signings of wicks & houston.

See how well Newton has been for Melbourne? they knew he had ability hence why they're first. Manly done the same with Perry and they're second.

Ron, we're all still happy that we have Smith and not Hagan. Just as you guys are happy to have Hagan and not Smith. Both clubs were in need of a change of coaches, and will be better for it in the long run. My club is filled with too many sub-standard players, and part of Smiths job description here was to shake things up and cut those sub-standard players, so we can essentially start afresh. For the record, the Dragons fans were mighty pissed off when we signed Houston, so I'd hardly say it's a poor signing.

How exactly is that Smiths fault? Before a ball was kicked, we'd lost both our wingers from last year in Carney and Quinn, plus one of our backup wingers in Salkeld, our best centre in Gidley, and our most experienced prop in Smith. Early into this year we lost Johns, Davico, and Thaiday for the season. We've also missed our key players in Kidley, Mullen, Buderus, Simpson and Perry for extended periods this year. The team that finished 4th last year used around 26 players all year. This year we've used 36. Yes, our Jersey Flegg team from last year were minor premiers and runners up in the grand final, and are all talented players, but you can't expect immediate results when you've got half that team all making their debut and playing first grade against far more experienced teams. You can't take the most experienced players out of a team that finished 4th one year, replace them with a bunch of 18 and 19 year old kids who were playing flegg last year and expect them to replicate the feats of the team before them. You just can't. One thing that we can take out of this year is that because they've been fast-tracked into first grade earlier than expected, these kids have gained invaluable experience and will be better for it next year.

Frederick, do you agree that Newcastle have suffered extensive injury tolls for the past few seasons?

The only thing you can really look at is the ladder.

Eels-3rd
Knights-3rd last

Although its a close race, Smith is losing at the moment.

2003, 04, and 05, yes. Last year, however, was our best year with injuries in a long, long time, and seemed to be the result of our USTEP conditioning program that we'd invested quite a fair bit of money into. But then this year rolls around and we cop an even worse injury toll than in 05 when we collected the spoon.

great, now can you answer this for me, why is it that according to some of your supporters 03,04 and 05 was all Hage's fault and yet this year with your new "you beaut" USTEP conditioning program in place, you tend to blame the injury toll as one of those things and not the coach as per years gone by.

seems a bit hypacritical to me or maybe I've missed something completely...

Those supporters are idiots. The club was to blame for those injury woes in 03, 04 and 05 for pussy-footing around when Western Suburbs in Newcastle made an offer to the Knights to form a sort of merger that would inject quite a large amount of cash into the club that would go a long way towards bringing our rehab and training facilities up to standard.

The merger happens, USTEP comes in, and we have our best run with injuries in 06.

Now this year rolls around and many of us are questioning USTEP and the methods that are used.

I think you'll find those that are blaming Hagan for the injuries are the extreme haters who are willing to blame anything on him. The reasons that I, and many like myself, were fed up with him was more to do with his player recruitment and selection policies. And before you say it, yes, I realise Johns was on a huge chunk of money, but the year that Ben Kennedy left we signed Reynoldson onto a huge contract to replace him. Surely if we had that kind of money to throw at Reynoldson we could've made Kennedy an equally as tempting offer.

Nice to read some common sense in this hate thread Frederick.

As you had Hagan haters so we had Smith haters. What many people fail to see is that both coaches have positives and negatives.

Aside from anything else any team with Johns on their books needs him fit. Simple as that.

What I find most - well I was going to say strange but it actually saddens me to see Parra fans carry on like this - is that we are third, we have an exciting team, and people still feel the need to carry on about Smith. It's petty really. Everytime I see this thread pop up on the front page i feel that little bit worse about the fans of my club. Totally unnecessary negativity when we could all be focusing on the positives.

I do agree with you 100% goboggo but considering the fact that you're relatively new to this forum I'm sure you'd be interested to see some wonderful thought provoking posts from some of the Newcastle fans in the the swamp thread, especially posted late March of this year it makes for very entertaining reading. ;-)

Brian Smith for an old coach has not reinvented himself as a coach like say Tim Sheens. He will not survive his 3 year contract at Newcastle.

not unless he walks away, Newcastle are not in a financial position to pay out coach's.
