Former Australian test captain and all-conquering Rugby League great Laurie Daley is the headline selection in an impressive line-up that represents the best Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander players to have ever laced a boot for the Raiders.

Daley, who played 244 first grade games for the Green Machine in a 14-year career, has been named at five-eighth and captain of a team which is laden with the greatest indigenous talent from throughout the Raiders 23-year history.

The team, selected by former coach and club icon Don Furner and current chairman John McIntyre, boasts a blistering backline and a forward pack headed by former international Sam Backo and inaugural Raiders Captain David Grant.

Other past Raiders crowd-pleasers to receive selection honour include “The Flash” Ken Nagas, flying eighties’ winger John “Chicka” Ferguson, and the late great halfback Scott Gale.

Centre Jason Bulgarelli, who has both Aboriginal and Italian origins, is the only current Raider to make the squad and has been named as a reserve.
The team will be presented to the Canberra Stadium crowd as part of the Raiders Reconciliation celebrations when it hosts the Sydney Roosters this Sunday.

The most notable omission from the team is Mal Meninga, who was not eligible for selection as he is of South Sea Island heritage.

The full line-up is as follows:

Fullback
Ken Nagas

Wing
Ray Blacklock
John Ferguson

Centres
Mark Bell
Graham Appo

Five-eighth
Laurie Daley

Halfback
Scott Gale

Lock
Percy Knight

Second-Row
Lui Bon
Damian Kennedy

Front-Row
Sam Backo
David Grant

Hooker
Terry Wickey

Reserves
Alfie Walker
Billy Walker
Jerry De la Cruz
Jason Bulgarelli

The only really good things about that team are one winger, one five-eighth and one fullback.

They shouldn't have tried to fill every position. The quality in some positions is weak to say the best.

What about the front rower who played for Qld and Australia?

And No 1... it is 5:1 at the moment in suggesting the team overall looks weak....

that team is fair f***in ordinary

Why?

It lists the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander players to have ever laced a boot for the Raiders.

Not the Greatest Raiders team EVER.
Did u expect them to name Mullins, Stuart and Furner too?

It's meant to be our 'all-time greatest indigenous side' no.1.

When you think this special jersey has come in to show our recognition for these players, it's a bit silly.

They are still supposed to be the BEST players........ this list shows that there are only a limited number of players who were genuinely strong players amongst those who qualify for selection. I'm sure that is not what the Raiders were intending, but it is how it has turned out.

In my view the genuinely strong players on the list are Daley, Nagas, Ferguson and Backo. Scott Gale didn't really play well for us. Grant and Blacklock and Bell were also OK. Other choices..... For instance, Appo is repeatedly listed on this forum as one of the worst players for the Raiders in its history.....

exactly
for such a prestigious honour some f**king nuffs got the nod
we shouldnt have tried to fill all positions, just a acknowledgement of the aboriginal/torris straight islanders would have been suffient
