Not Everything Counts but Everything Matters by Ivan Cleary with Andrew Webster

How connection and courage teach us to win - an NRL leadership story, from the visionary coach who pulled off the impossible to inspire, mentor and lead a grassroots club to the pinnacle of performance and become the undisputed champions of the league

Described as the greatest achievement the modern game has seen, Ivan Cleary is the man behind the astonishing, historic benchmark of multiple back-to-back premiership wins by the Penrith Panthers in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

In his own words, Cleary tells all about what he's learned and how he leads, informed by his decades as a player and coach - a playmaker, team builder, mentor and leader who understands that not everything counts, but everything matters. Drawing on his years of experience - professional and personal - Cleary shares insights into his success, including the value of persistence, the importance of culture, community and connection, facing your fears and tackling them head-on, the architecture of achievement ... and the importance of risking it all.

He also delves deep into his work with one of the most diverse teams in the league, the challenges he faces as leader, and how to inspire a team of individuals to hall-of-fame team greatness, including working with his son and co-captain, Nathan, regarded as the best player in the league, as well as the young, talented players who have come up through the local club, and the superstar players who represent the exciting and changing face of the game. With a foreword by former Wallabies coach John Hart and insights from Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo, Api Koroisau and former Panthers Head of Performance Hayden Knowles, this powerful book reveals how to create a champion team.

The Telecrap has been releasing bits of it the last few days.

I’ll be buying it. I get heaps out of these sorts of books. I’ve heard plenty of good things.

My birthday is in November, hopefully my missus grabs it for me. If not, I'll drop some less subtle hints in the lead up to Christmas.

My work put everyone through a High Performing Leaders course last year (15 day long sessions), and are on this "cultural transformation journey". We use a different consulting company than the Panthers, but so much of the stuff that comes out of the players regarding culture, accountability, leadership, team values etc, aligns really closely with my own learnings. I'm expecting this book to lean very heavily into that kind of mindfulness type content.

Interestingly, the leadership consultant that my work uses is in very tight with the Brisbane Lions. He started with them at the start of 2022 when they had been consistently in the finals, but struggling to break through. In the 3 years he's worked with them, they had a Prelim loss, a Grand Final loss, and a Premiership. There is definitely something in this stuff.

Just finished this.

My main personal take away from it is how much success is born out of unquantifiable means. We all look at how x player will go to y club and thus result in z results. We all do it. But so much is happening that we are unaware of. Season previews don’t take into account mental states and personal growth of coaches and players.

Him saying Api is our club’s greatest ever signing is an eye opener. A wonderful player and a big part of our success, but much of that assessment is based off things we don’t take into account when assessing a club’s value and prospects.

Terrific book. There’s so much in there worth talking about. Hopefully plenty of you do yourselves a favour and pick up a copy.
