Jack Bird to Dragons 2018 Rumour Won't Go Away

He lost his brother that year right? And then was outed for some weeks due to almost taking JT's head off. Added to this the fact that he never played one solid position for us and there you have the reason why he never reach his full potential at the Dragons. He did have a drop in him.

He's a middle forward. The poor bastard suffered by ably filling in as a centre once or twice for Bennett, and then Price deduced he could be another Tonie Carroll or Beau Scott.

Well in 2018 we have Hunt at 7 so the question is who will be at 6. I suppose much will depend on how Widdop, Mann and Field go in 2017.

There are lots of options available to Mary however, is he up to testing at least the most obvious options of which none include McCrone.

So does everyone believe me now that Field should partner Hunt in the halves for 2018?

Bird is a phenomenal player there's no doubt about that, but Field is already looking exceptional before the 2017 season has even kicked off. The kid is only going to get better and he is probably playing for 1/7th of the price that Bird will be demanding. Besides, with Barba off to Toulon that gives the Sharks the cash to fight back hard for Bird's signature.
I know a lot of you will say let's wait and see how he goes this year against men in 13 aside footy, but I don't know... This kid really has it. Everything he's shown me so far suggests he will be the perfect halves partner for Hunt, and if he is weak in defence then he can be hidden by one of our back-rowers. Let's not forget how much we loved Soward and he was practically a speed hump in defence.
We have to think smart moving forward with our roster. Retaining Field and not chasing Bird will gives us a lot of money to spend elsewhere, for example bolstering the forward pack or retaining Dugan (at the right price).

the way saints are going, Bird is not even on our radar, lets say Rumors are true and we have offered Milford a contract , thats says saints are over Bird or the contracts are out for both , first in first serve.

Doust is finally waking up to the benefit of making offers that even if not successful, they stretch the salary cap of other Clubs. Mann, Field and Dufty were standouts in the 9's. Let's see how they go in the trials and then see how they go in 2017. The retention decisions on Dugan and Widdop will have a big bearing on the three above mentioned young players.

Correct. I would hate to see us let Mann go. He's a natural footballer. Field has already extended his contract and really there is no need to chase Bird ( other than to push the Price up.) if we keep the majority of the above.

I don't really see Birds future being in the backs.

A lock forward or an edge forward is where I think he will meet his potential.

Why does this post keep going
There is no evidence anywhere that we are chasing him and as stated he wants to stay at the sharks long term
I think newcastle have given up on him as well
I think the rumour is just more bullshit
If someone can show some evidence please do so

I thought he looked great at lock when he played 20's for us.
Lock would have been perfect for Bird in the 80, 90's and early naughties, but the way coaches structure their teams today, I have my doubts about Bird playing lock in first grade. I think centre and 5/8 are his positions right now, he could develop into a top edge (second row) forward in years to come.

Personally I liked him at 5/8 in his first season of first grade for Cronulla. To my knowledge he did play most of his juniors at 5/8. When I first heard of the wraps on Bird he was still playing 5/8 in the juniors.

I would be very happy with a halves pairing or Hunt and Bird. I would also be very happy with a halves pairing or Hunt and Moses. In saying that we may have 2 very good young halves at our club right now in Field and Mann. I do hope that Mary gives Mann first shot as Widdop's halves partner. I wanted Mary to give Mann a shot in the halves last year, when Marshall was our injured. Maybe Hunt paired with either Field or Mann could form a top pair of halves?

I am comfortable with Field being blooded into first grade as a winger in 2017.

He has speed to burn
He is very elusive and agile
He can sore a try
He can take a high ball
HIs defence will improve

A few observations.

1. Jack Bid is never coming back to the Dragons.
2. We have ample decent juniors coming through and don't need him. You recruit where you need talent; hence Ben Hunt's recruitment. The hooker position is probably our next most pressing issue.
3. Widdop will not be at our club next year. Either Field or Mann will be # 6.
4. With reduced interchange coming, the need to have speed in the middle of the park to take advantage of tired big forwards will be critical. Hence the need to have great organisational skill at # 7 and blinding speed at # 6.
5. Dugan's days at # 1 are over because he cannot enter the line and pass.

AND FINALLY.... Mickylane...How good was Mitch Brennan mate? The best Dragons winger I ever saw and that includes Blacklock, Morris, Morris and Morris.
