Imagine if a team did this in the current era...

The psychologists' couch would be full for an entire calendar year...
They probably should still do this, if only to get phyiscally numb to the impact when you play on field, i dont think these guys in the 70s and 80s thought it was some psycho experiment, its was just a good way for your team mates to get you accoustomed to the pain that would go on at the game itself, the game was brutal back then, head highs from the side... punch ons, game now hasnt got all that, but it still has plenty of tackle impact, and the occasional head knock per game

Reading the article, this seems to have gone well beyond the "do some extra because you were late" and into full-blown bullying/humiliation by the trainer. Sounds as if some psychological damage was inflicted as well.

Topine didn't even realise he was late - turned up at 8:10 for an 8:30 session, he thought only players who needed strapping were supposed to be there by 8am.

If the NRL is serious about supporting mens mental health they ought to intervene - dismissing this incident as "club culture" or "that's how it's always been" simply isn't good enough.

Catalans for a couple of years to get his form and mental health back, then back into NRL. Seems to be the way.
He’s played 16 games since his debut in 2021 (for a bottom 4 side). Currently does not have an nrl contract. Not sure he was ever going to be more than a fringe first grader. If clubs were considering him before this, they probably look to other options now.

I dont want to sound like im defending the club or anything, but since he was a fringe player, do you think it might just be a cash grab, him full well knowing he wasnt going to get another contract, so burn it all down so to speak, get as much as you can on the way out? I dont know the full story other than what the papers printed

Unfortunately for him, he was a fringe first grader at best, and his papers were stamped the minute he was outed last year, no club will touch him with a 10 foot pole. May as well get what he can

If he had left the club and picked up another contract I doubt this would be going ahead.

Based on the report I fully support the guy. It's bullying and intimidation. Exactly what I would have expected from a Gould dominated club. The fact that RL is a game played by blokes doesn't mean you're entitled to deride and physically dominate anyone. These dickheads need to grow-up.
