James Tamou - allegiance

I know the situations are (slightly) different, but with Fien playing for us we can't really be throwing stones.

I think it's a bs decision on his part and I hope he gets smashed for it, but it shows just how stupid the whole alliegence thing is. Hopefully the Aussies are just as outraged as we are that he's a New Zealander representing Australia, taking a spot away from one of their own. He knows he's a Kiwi, and I hope one day he looks back and regrets this decision.

At present, I don't think we'll know what he'll think in the future. However, if he becomes part of the Origin set-up he'll likely see it as a highlight of his life. I've never heard players like Carroll, Thorn, Mason or cutie mention anything about regret (although the latter is too young and daft for any thing like regrets).

Where you're born is an overused template for allegiance anyway. If it was used as a rule, we'd see big Frank Pritchard in blue/green n' gold for starters.

Chopping and changing isn't too good though.

True, we'll never know if he regrets it. And what is important to one is not for another. Where you are born does not necessarily represent where you feel is 'home'- IMO you pledge allegience to one country, and stick to it. There may be some leeway should someone emigrate and become a citizen of another country-and after a standdown then maybe play for the new country.
Tamou said in his interview that he will always consider NZ home...which is why my suspicion is that he will regret passing up the opportunity to be a part of the Kiwi family. But maybe that Origin stuff will make up for it, who knows?
If we suddenly hit a good era of Kiwi history, it may well be hard for him to witness from the outside...:?

Agree, I like Fein as a player, and he certainly seems like a good bloke...but I always feel uneasy seeing him there in the Kiwis. Felt the same with Brent Webb.

World Champs, I think we're in a good era in Kiwi history now! I'm over Tamou already, and to be honest I'd never heard of him before this allegiance thing 'blew up' - which possibly shows he's only one of many good forwards doing the rounds in the NRL.

The Kiwis will never be short of good props. I remember back in the day, Kevin Tamati would only start if either one of Kurt or Dane Sorenson didn't. Or was it the other way around? Point is, Tamou, a good player and I wish him well (but not against the Kiwis or Warriors), is amongst a group of ten or so NZ props who're equally as good as each other.

Also, they're now using the 'Tamou situation' to put bums on seats this Friday (which includes in loungerooms watching on Nine). It's all hype and of little consequence to who wins.

I'll imagine he'll be regretting it when Bunj and Isaac are up in his face doing the haka. Maybe he'll do a Rua Tipoki and do his own haka.

Good luck to the man.

I hope he's not targeted as with Rangi Chase and the team remember there is another 12 players out there on the field they need to keep an eye on.
If he doesn't want to play for the Kiwis now them we probably dont want or need him.

I mean I could understand Tony Williams being selected from nowhere last year, he was in top form, but Tamou? Seriously, is he that good?

Have you actually seen any Cowboys matches in the past 18 months? Tamou has been close to our best every game this season and he's averaging about 150m and 30 tackles per game.

Last year he led the league (or close to) in offloads and tacklebreaks as well.

Tamou is a gun. I agree he should be playing for the Kiwis. But I also believe Kearney is a f*ckwit who doesn't know a good player when he sees one. Hard to lay blame at Tamou's feet in this one.

Imagine if both Matulino and Frank P hit Tamou! O_O

Both would get jail time for murder, but probably let off cause Tamou has no heart and therefore isn't human.

I don't think big Frank will be saying "You should be representing the country of your birth, biatch!" anytime soon.

Frankie Pritchard was being recruited for Origin by Stuart recently and didn't budge, so give him credit on that. Also he put his hand up to play for the Kiwis when he was 20 years old and was onsidered a boom young player, he would have been being told that Origin was in his future at the time.

Nrl on fox tonight had Tallis on, he wasn't happy, going on about Tamou doing Hakas at cowboys presentations, being ecstatic about making kiwi squad etc last year. Gyer and Johns not to happy about the situation either, but started having shots about soo game.
Origin hasn't been a competition for the last 5 years! Shit nz has won more tournaments in that time than nsw! Rules need to be tightened up, Aussie stealing Fiji players is worse than nz though. If the players want more money they need to grow the game internationally not between 2 states.

just shows what kind of a person he really is, and do you really want him representing NZ?And if I was going for the Kangaroos I wouldn't want someone like him who (has played for NZ Maori, been selected in the NZ train on squad, played for the junior kiwis, calls NZ home and did this for a 'career decision') representing me, my culture, my home, my family ect, his loyalties, character, attitudes, morals and values are in question and he has imo lost sight of who he really is he is simply a mercenary out for the biggest deposit in his bank account at the end of the day, and I (no matter who I was supporting) would never want someone like that representing me. However at the end of the day it is sport and he fullfills the right requirements to do it, but my greatest fear is how this will affect young kiwis coming up in the future and the influences it will have on them. People who say it cheapens the Australian jersey and SOO are 100% right. They are at a point now where the rules on who you can represent need to be updated in reference to SOO and internationally. They need to decided if SOO can be open to anyone in reference to international RL, or (as I think it should be) represent the state you call home (something Tamou will never understand) and thus making yourself available to Australia, I see a problems in the future, say a kid born outside of NSW or QLD in Australia, being recruited by the Warriors or a PNG team (and only stepping foot in these SOO states when playing games there), and wanting to represent Australia, who would he play for in SOO? would he want to play SOO? (it is between NSWelshman and QLDanders remember.) I dont blame Tamou for doing this, Fault lies with the people who run the game who make the rules, Also I think Meninga and Stuart need to stop 'recruiting' again it cheapens SOO, people should put their hand up not be asked to play its a privlidge not a right. As a result NSW/QLD and Aus will always have non Australians playing for them, which at the end of the day isn't right at all for both sides.

Good luck this friday Tamou, remember bring an ambulance.

thats my 0.02, thanks

Hope Tamou gets smashed. The ARL or whoever is running the state of orgin should allow Kiwis to play. That way International Tests won't be run like they are now - a big con job. Go Kiwis flog the Roo's.

Especially since he switched to Samoa last year

But Frank P is a Kiwi who has Samoan heritage, right? Who's to say he shouldn't be able to represent both countries he has running through his blood with the same pride.

I think I said this in another thread, but it's situations like what which get allegiance all messy. You have guys like Goodwin who has NZ heritage, but who's father played for Aus. Is he a proud Kiwi? Probably not, but how do you prove that, and how can you deny him wanting to represent NZ when he has ties to the country?

In Tamou and Fiens case, things are more clear cut, they both have no ties to the country they represent other than residency (well, Fien had children born here, right? Might sway ones emotions, but that's by the by) which is a total crock.
