Jamil Hopoate charged by with assault

PROMISING young NRL player Jamil Hopoate has been charged over the assault of another man in Manly over the weekend.

Police said they are investigating an assault on a 29-year-old near a hotel in Market Lane at 11.45pm on Saturday after he was allegedly “king hit’’ after a confrontation with a group of men.

The 19-year-old son of former first grader John Hopoate and brother of Will walked in to the station about 1pm with his barrister Julieanne Levick.

“My client is here to tell his side of the story,’’ Ms Levick said.

“He admits to being present at the scene but was not the offender who carried out the alleged king hit on the victim.’’

Hopoate is currently with the Manly Rugby League Club.
