Oct 04 - Michael Jennings has capped a great debut year by not only being named Rookie of the Year, but also being named the 2007 Player of the Year at the Panthers Presentation Night.

Jennings was awarded the Ben Alexander Rookie of the Year Award in what has been one of the largest fields of debutants for the Panthers in recent years. In total, seven players had made their NRL debut this year; however it was Jennings outstanding ability from his very first game against the Broncos which saw him take the award.

The Player of the Year Award a was an even contest until Round 21. Luke Rooney was an early leader until injury ended his hopes of securing the award but it was Tony Puletua who took over and held that lead until Round 22. Up until that time Michael Jennings had trailed the leaders but with some strong performances in the last games of the year he was untouchable from Round 23 and went on to win.

18pts - Michael Jennings
14pts - Tony Puletua
14pts - Nathan Smith
14pts - Frank Pritchard
11pts - Frank Puletua

Panthers stalwart, Frank Puletua, was awarded the Clubman Award by Chairman Barry Walsh; an award which Barry described as being the backbone of the club. The John Farragher Award for Courage and Determination was awarded to Nathan Smith.

In the lower grades, Brendan Smith and Craig Trindall were awarded the Premier League Player of the Year Award and in Jersey Flegg Masada Iosefa and Brendan Hlad shared the top prize.

A special presentation was made to Arthur Reilly ahead of his retirement in December. Arthur has held numerous positions within the rugby league operations from when he first started as a talent scout and more recently to his role as Gear Manager.

After initially being a volunteer Arthur became fulltime in 1995 and has cumulatively served the club for 20 years. In accepting his award Arthur said that while he will miss the club, he was looking foward to spending more time with his family.

Brendan Smith really slipped under the radar. Was a real quiet achiever as I cannot recall too much about him but I hope he played in our halves.

Used to be a D at Penrith, remember? Always had big legs. Went back to footy and lost 65 kgs and returned to Penrith. Didn't you recognise him Kilkenny?

Can someone explain to me how in the hell tony puletuea gets so high in those rankings, that's near on farcical IMO.

Oh and congrats to jennings well deserved. I probably would have had him 2nd behind F Puletuea though.

Very first game against the Broncos? :?

I thought he made his debut in Round 2 against the Bulldogs. I think he might have even scored a try. Can someone confirm?

He did score a try just before halftime in that round 2 game against the Dogs.

Brilliant one too, from memory - latched on a loose ball on the ground about 40 metres out, and toed it through to score. He may have out sprinted Patten in the process as well.

I also remember seeing the Channel 9 replay later on, and while it said "Michael Jennings - Try on debut", the camera was actually on Junior Moors!

Yes, and has stipped drinking 2 litres of warm cask wine whilst playing computer games in his bedroom every night.

Believe it or not, BS claimed to have played Jersey Flegg for Canberra in the early 90's. I am dubious about this claim, to say the least. I believe the subject person's initials are quite ironic.

You'd know. Did you not used to share rental premises with him at one stage. Clearly playing PS2 and drinking large quantities of warm moselle clearly had an adverse effect on his ability to make the top grade in the NRL. Could have been a champion but sadly ended up living with Fibroman and it was all downhill from there.

Congratulations to him definately your best player this year. I think he needs to curb his ego a bit looked to have a bit of an attitude playing for the junior roos today. Dont want him to turn into a younger Justin Hodges in his day.

A bit of attitude is good, but speaking to Jennings, he is a great guy and character...and does not overly seem like someone who will let ego get the better of him.

From what I have seen he is very down to earth. I don't know where you draw your conclusion about him having ego or attitude.

Very very down to earth. I've met him and had a chat to him.

I remember that conversation. You were star struck for words. The copious amount of schooners didn't help. Hey you've got the photo on your phone to prove the conversation. Michael was very diplomatic I thought and he was also kind to your kid Asbestos Boy too.

.
.

I've never seen him be anything less than open, friendly, and very patient with both adults and kids alike who want to stop him for an autograph or a chat.

And I am yet to see him display any arrogance or bad attitude on the field either. He is always enthusiastic and enjoying himself immensely.....win or lose.
