Seems one of our local kids who is pretty ill asked Manly for a jersey for a benefit night and was told he could have one for almost $200!!!

Peter Peters then came out with a sad excuse and basically badmouthed the Central Coast.

Class act, Manly.

Central Coastie, I'd be very very careful if I was you, don't be negligent in your duty of checking the facts!

Peter Peters words:

"The Manly Sea Eagles has come in for a barrage of unwarranted criticism over the cost of a signed jersey for 11 year old James Booth from the Central Coast.
A letter from the Wyoming Rugby League
Club was sent to the Sea Eagles with a request for a donated signed jersey.
It was one of 40 requests received weekly.
Some of the cases are as bad or worse than young James and the club has great sympathy and understanding for every request received.
There was a column by an by an unknown (to us)journalist in a Central Coast publication suggested the "SILVERTAILS MANLY THUMB NOSE AT CENTRAL COAST AGAIN".That was nothing more than a cheap shot at the Manly Football Club by a journalist who was negligent in his duty of checking the facts.Had the author of the column checked with the club he would have found out that there never was a mention of a demand for $165 for a signed jersey.
A letter of reply was sent out from the club outlining the club had a policy of assisting charities and similar cases in its own district.
However,an offer of purchase for $135 was made...way down on the price of $225 normally charged for an autographed jersey. And less than the ficticious $165
price mentioned.
(Some clubs in the NRL charge $400 for a signed jersey).
If the Manly Sea Eagles gave jerseys for every sick kid in NSW and Queensland we would be out of business.
It is a shame that the illness of a sick boy was used to slander a football club which goes out of its way to support community services.
For every sad story like the one surrounding James Booth there is another one of assistance which goes un-noticed.
Supporters can be certain that every effort is made to answer all requests and help where possible but again I highlight that we concentrate on our own area.
We don't seek publicity about our assistance to local charities - it is part of our charter to be better citizens.
As for Manly owing the Central Coast a truck load of cash from our time on the Coast
our answer is this - we owe nothing and we never had any time on the Coast.....THAT WAS A NIGHTMARE! - Admin"

Facts? Simple. Family of a genuinely sick child requested a signed jumper. They were told "pay for it". Why? Because that's the way we do things at Manly. Facts? 40 requests a week. Even at $100 per jumper, this would amount to around $50,000 per annum which should be a pittance for a well funded NRL team.

As for the other assertions. Ask Peters to prove it. My understanding is that Northern Eagles players still remain unpaid by Manly. I may be wrong - but ask them.

Also, the maroon and white Eagles team which was up at Godford for a year or two enabled Manly to stay afloat. You should be grateful. NOT sledging CC people.

It's worth summarising Manly's performance in the last few years:
1. Manly bankrupt - but kept it a secret - magically end up running a maroon and white Eagles team out of Gosford with $22 million in funding from News Ltd.
2. Huge ATO debt - unpaid.
3. Manly undertake to pay ex-players to ensure they get NRL licence after "JV" breaks up. Then Manly refuse to pay players. NRL does ...nothing??
4. Manly flog half the club to Peters' nephew for a pittance.
5. Even the pittance is not enough to send a free signed jumper to a very sick child who IS a Manly supporter.
6. Manly proclaim themselves the great white knight who fought Murdoch. then, they have a News Ltd director on the board and show off Lachlan Murdoch's wife as No 1 fan!!!

You guys are, quite simpy, a hypocritical joke. The jersey thing is possibly the lowest, cheapest, most despicable behaviour I've ever seen.

when are the Bears going to pay there fill of the Northern Eagles Debt?

Oh, thats right, the Football club is still 3 Million in the hole...

The Roosters Charge $200 a Jersey, get over it (Mind you, as a part time employee of an agent of western union, I recieved 2 signed Jerseys and Primo grand final tickets. Interesting that...)

My understanding is that other NRL clubs donated jerseys despite the fact that the boy is a Manly fan (and so they should) - this puts Peters comments into perspective and it does not look good. Trying to "sugar-coat" the issue only makes Peters look even more ignorant and uncaring.

Basically, those comments have excacerbated an already embarrassing situation and anybody that supports those "excuses" should be ashamed of themselves. Due to the sensitivity of the issue, I normally would not comment, but those "excuses" from Peters are ludicrous in the extreme, and to then, in the same breath, refer to a petty argument about owing this and that, well that shows a total lack of compassion.

I'm sure if the boy were your son, you would find cold comfort in Peters words - the whole incident is a disgrace, and to try and justify it beggars believe.

The Bears are debt free courtesy of the arrangement with Singo. Former northern eagles players have been repaid.

Manly can't say the same. But you make excuses for them. Why don't the NRL intervene and force them to pay ex Neagles players?

Before we bag Manly on this issue, my question is do all NRL clubs give to all requests and/or do they charge a fee.

Doesn't matter to some bluebag, facts are never to get in the way of a good bagging.I got to admit(along with alot of manly fans)I was pretty dissapointed when I read about this late last week and think it definately should have been handled alot better. As the club says they receive umpteen requests for donations every week and they can not fullfill them all.I know at my bussiness the amount of calls I get for donations and the amount of times I have to say no,I have 4 charities I support and support them well.
I don't know if the club knew the full circumstancees of this brave young fellow(that he was a supporter)or not and treated the letter like the hundreds of others. The club does do good work in their area like all clubs do but it does not make good news so we hardly hear about it.

Amigo, all I know is some clubs in the NRL sell signed jerseys for up to $400 and some clubs simply refuse to sell autographed jerseys.

Name one player who has received a payment from the North Sydney District Rugby League Football Club Ltd for playing services rendered during 2001 to the Manly-Norths District Rugby League Club Pty Ltd (trading as "Northern Eagles").

Manly can't say the same. But you make excuses for them. Why don't the NRL intervene and force them to pay ex Neagles players?

The NRL can't intervene because the Manly Warringah District Rugby League Football Club Ltd has no legal obligation to pay the ex Northern Eagles players nor any other creditor of the Northern Eagles. Similarly, North Sydney District Rugby League Football Club Ltd has no legal obligation to pay the debts incurred by the Northern Eagles, hence why Norths haven't paid.

Manly committed to paying those players and will do so as funds permit. There was no timeframe on Manly's commitment to pay.

To date, Manly has paid $838,825 in player payments to ex Northern Eagles players for their services rendered to the Northern Eagles in 2001.

In addition, Manly has paid a further $144,279 for other expenses on behalf of the Northern Eagles.

That is a total of $983,104 that Manly has paid despite having no legal obligation to do so.

The reality is, most of the players have been paid in full. There are around 8 players that have received a total of approx 71c in the dollar from the Northern Eagles and Manly. The total outstanding to these players is $288,645.

If the Penn Sport deal goes through, my understanding is that payments to the ex Northern Eagles players will be finalised with some of the cash injected by Penn Sport, meaning Manly will have paid out in excess $1.27m on behalf of the Northern Eagles.

Wel have a friggin' cry about it then

You can't expect a NRL club to simply give a jersey away because some kid's got a sob story to justify why they should get a jumper for nothing.

Secondly, the person who should be getting the kick in the arse for this fiasco is not the Eagles but the narrow-mind, ignorant genius who wrote that story. Obviously, that person is very bigoted about the central coast and regards anything of a Sydney nature to be evil.

TO all the Central Coast people b*tching like little dorks about this issue I say this to you. Cry a river, build a bridge, and get over it

Rastus. this isn't about the request for the signed jersy, but the fact that some dipsh*t who claims to be a journalist has used this to deliberately slander the Sea Eagles

The article itself was the typical crap you'd read in any central coast newspaper, where CC people are always the poor victims (oh my bleeding heart) and the Sydneysiders are always the bad guys.

As for your claim that I have the intellectuaql capacity of an amoeba, I'll just assume that you're a genius and won't be able to understand this.

Have a good day :D
