Galuvao praying for contractual miracle
Adrian Proszenko | September 2, 2007
FORMER Kiwi forward Joe Galuvao could be spared the ignominy of playing out the remainder of his South Sydney contract in the Queensland Cup after attracting interest from Wests Tigers.
The Rabbitohs suggested devout christian Galuvao should give up football and join the ministry after he was deemed surplus to requirements.
In a further attempt to make him quit his $350,000-a-season contract, the club has sent him to play for Easts Tigers, Souths' feeder club in Brisbane. Galuvao has had discussions with Tigers coach Tim Sheens about the possibility of joining the joint-venture club on a second-tier contract, but the Rabbitohs would have to top up his contract for the move to happen. If they don't, the 2003 premiership winner is prepared to dig his heels in at Souths, despite being forced to play interstate.
Parramatta have also made informal inquiries about Galuvao's availability for next year.
"He's still got to work out what he's doing at South Sydney," Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell said. "Him coming here is a possibility, but it's all about him working out his contractual agreements with Souths."
Player manager Allan Gainey will meet with Souths officials next week about the prospect of a release.
"Souths may be prepared to pay out a portion of his contract, but we're still a long way off," he said. Huddersfield coach Jon Sharp hailed tryscoring sensation Rod Jensen after the Australian's spectacular length-of-the-field score sent the Giants on their way to a 34-22 victory over Super League play-off rivals Warrington.
