Canberra Raiders' Joel Thompson stood down

February 03, 2009 CANBERRA Raiders second rower Joel Thompson has been stood down by the NRL club after being charged with assault on January 22.
Details of the charge were not immediately available.

"Joel Thompson has been stood down today by the club and will not participate in any club activities until this matter has been finalised by the appropriate authorities," club chief executive Don Furner said.

"Until this time he will not be training or playing with the club and a decision on his future with the Raiders will be made at a later date."

The 2007 junior Australia player made his first grade debut last year.

Thompson will appear in court on February 25.

Wow, was hoping we left all this stuff behind us in 2008. Will be interesting to get some more details on the situation. Far out...

To qualify to be a professional footballer do you have to be a d*ckhead. These guys cant be smart , I hope he is innocent , otherwise he will have to follow in the paths of Goodwin and TC

Well, that was a waste of a year for us. Ironically this could open the negotiating door with Mick Croker.

I can't see him staying with us unless there were mitigating circumstances and he gets off the charge.

Well, Win news just reported that the charge is for bashing his girlfriend.

That's the last we'll see of Joel Thompson playing for the Raiders. I don't care what she did (unless she attacked him with a weapon or something), there's no room for that sort of crap.

I wont comment on this case other than I can say with absolute certainty that the only common ingredient between this and just about every other incident you hear concerning footballers is the obvious .... alcohol ... a real f**king shame.

That ingredient is an bane on society in general.
