How the hell didn't Centerlink pick up that he was earning income from Knights :?: Geez that place is hopeless. Can't be too many Knights fans working there. ;-)

Heaps of people do this sort of shit and get away with it all the time.

Did you ever think of the possibilty that there just might be other people in Newcastle with the name "John Morris" ???

Well it became apparant Morris was a gready sod when he sold out to the Eels, but I didn't think he was that gready. There's plenty of kids his age out there struggling to get benifits legit, so I for one am glad they got him. No sympathy from me I'm affraid. :x :x Should've fined him double what he fiddled.

Yeah sounds a bit suss to me, i mean its not as if you wouldnt notice that nine grand extra was in your bank account......and i dont understand why he only had to pay 3,000 back....... basically they are or have given him six grand for nothing

Something is awfully fishy about this..... :p

I just want to correct a few people, you can get youth allowance while you are working but you have to be studying at the same time - and when you fill out the forms you have to put down your earnings and expenses and from that they determine how much money you recieve, and the only way to be overpaid is if you give them the wrong information.

He would have had to put in a form every two weeks, he knew what he was doing.

Youth Allowance only requires one form, and thats the one you apply with.

... or if you give them the info but they don't do anything about it!

Reading the article, he did pay it all back, and was fined $3,000. So in total he paid $11979.57

Put it this way, if you dont put in a tax return, you can claim the dole and work full time and no one is the wiser.

Once you do however, you get audited and it isnt pretty.

No doubt this will have embarrassed Morris, at least I hope it has. Rorting the welfare system is pretty low. I'm not sure why John would commit such an unusual crime and i'm not looking for excuses but one may suspect that the contract he was on with the Knights wasn't exactly 6 figures and his father was terminally ill a bit of extra income could have helped ease the burden. And he has paid it back in full.

Also, whoever said John Morris was greedy because he left the club is kidding themselves. Johns main positions are 5/8 and hooker. with Rudder and Buderus a premiership winning combination, Morris would be committing career suicide by choosing to fight his way into a starting position on such a diabolical income.

Hopefully Morris puts this behind him...and learns from his mistakes.

Danny Buderus was a half-back who took on the hooking role as he was behind Joey. Rudder was a back-rower who became a five-eighth when Matty Johns was released. Both players opted to stay at the club and take up the challenge of a different position. Morris could've done the same thing.

I don't want to make excuses for Morris, but I do know his life wasn't all roses around the time he was claiming this extra money. His father had a very serious illness, and John had to travel up to Scone very regularly to deal with very sad family issues.
Stress can make people do funny things, and he was obviously under a lot of stress at that time.

It depends on what he told centrelink.

You can get the youth allowance if you are studying, & you don't have to put in a form as you have been exempt from job search activities.

You can get the youth allowance but you have to show you are actively looking for paid work etc. And you have to put in a fortnightly form.

I know this for a fact as I used to work for the CES.
