One of the greats who redefined the way we play the game.
Paved the way for the Manu Vatuvei, Taniela types, or any big guy on the winger that was power over evasion.

Very sad day. Was a great man on and off the field and very giving of his time to all.

RIP big man

He was always battling kidney issues and i do recall at least one news source years ago suggesting death was a real option, but he seemed to have turned a real corner the last five years, appearing fit and healthy in videos, such a shame.

The thing is, that really doesn;t describe the type of player Lomu was, and really understates his talent. While he undoubtably had immense power, and everyone remembers him running over the top of Mike Catt for THAT try, that wasn't what made his special. It was the fact that he was also a genuine speed merchant with a brilliant swerve who constantly beat players with pure pace, as well and having superb balance and brilliant hands. He had all of the attributes that a player with a great running game can possess, in a 198cm, 118kg frame. HE was an absolute freak the likes of we may never see again.

Watch this video of him during the world cup in 1995 and see how he scores most of his tries, it's phenomenal.

Pretty shocked and shattered by it all...

Met him a few times... Was incredibly generous with his time.

My favourite Jonah story was from a mate mine who went to Jonah's old school Wesley College...

It was about 1999/2000ish... Jonah was a massive star... My mate was part of a group of Wesley College borders who decided they were going to wag school for the afternoon and go to the local mall in Manukau...

While they were there they saw Jonah who was doing some promo work for one of his sponsors... Jonah had about 50 or 60 people around him getting autographs and photos so the group of boys decided it would be best just to yell and wave to him from a distance.

Jonah then spotted them... Walked away from his promo work... Approached the guys... And gave them a MASSIVE spray about wagging school... He also gave them a massive spray about how they were wearing the uniform and made them all tidy up before he borrowed the sponsors van and took them all back to school and marched them into the principles office to explain themselves...

My mate has hated the guy ever since...

RIP big man
