Concern: Dragons winger Jordan Pereira remains in hospital following Saturday's injury. Picture: Adam McLean.
Jordan Pereira's St George Illawarra teammates have expressed their support for the winger after he was injured on Saturday afternoon.

The winger remains in hospital undergoing scans after he landed on his head in a sickening incident that occurred when Pereira was scoring a try during the Dragons Canterbury Cup loss to Newtown on Saturday.

Pereira's teammate Darren Nicholls was watching from the sideline on Saturday, having played in the NRL team's two-point loss to Melbourne on Thursday night, and the 30-year-old said the elation that came when Pereira grounded the ball was very quickly replaced with worry.

"I felt a little bit sick," Nicholls said. "Everyone in the squad was really worried about Jordan, it's not good to see.

"It was a great finish, he jumped from the field, left hand in the left corner, but it was just unfortunate the position he landed in.

"It went from a great finish of a try to 'Shit, he's not getting back up.' When the stretcher was taken out there, it was very worrying. Sometimes if you land in that position, it can be all sweet, but sometimes not so good."

The injury was suffered when Pereira did what most wingers do in rugby league matches across the country every week, he launched himself into the air in a desperate attempt to score.

It's an act that NRL wingers have seemingly perfected, though with defenders flying in to prevent the try being scored, there is very little margin for error.

Despite the risk of injury, St George Illawarra centre Euan Aitken said wingers are too committed to scoring to stop attempting such spectacular dives.

"It's one of those things you just go for it in the moment," Aitken said. "If you hesitate it's lost.

"I don't think it's going to change too much, it's an exciting aspect of the game the way wingers put the ball down in the corner in limited space.

"Obviously defences are going to try to stop it, but the wingers seem to score those tries more often than not."

Aitken's comments come as the Dragons attempt to rebound from another tight loss on Thursday night. The defeat was St George Illawarra's ninth of the year in what has been a challenging season for the club.

Despite their struggles, the side remains just two points outside the top eight with nine games remaining.

While he would much prefer his side be sitting comfortably inside the eight, Aitken is confident St George Illawarra can string together the wins required to make the finals.

"I'm disappointed with where we are. We feel like we've got a better team than the position we're sitting on the ladder.

"There's plenty of games to go and I've got faith in this team to push for a finals spot. We need to win six from nine, it might seem a bit of a crazy number, but it's not when the confidence builds and you get a couple of wins together.

"That's all we need, a couple of wins together, it will be good for our team and there's a few personnel that's going to come back."

St George Illawarra Head of Athletic Performance Nathan Pickworth has provided the following injury update on Dragons winger Jordan Pereira.

Pereira was injured in the process of the scoring a try in the first half of the Canterbury Cup Dragons' 24-18 loss to the Newtown Jets last Saturday afternoon.

"Jordan was released from hospital last night. Over the past couple of days, he's had a series of scans on his neck as well as his upper limb and he's been cleared of any serious neck injury," Pickworth said.

"He's back home now, he's out of the neck brace and he's moving around okay at the moment."

Pickworth confirmed Pereira had suffered an injury to his brachial plexus – the nerve group which comes from the neck and supplies the arm with function and sensation.

"At this stage we'll be resting him up, assessing him day-to-day and as his symptoms start to clear, we'll have a better gauge on when his return to play will be," Pickworth said.

"It's really good news that he's been cleared of anything serious in his neck, and we're optimistic at this stage that he'll make a full recovery."

Pereira: 'There was a chance I could lose my arm'

Dragons winger Jordan Pereira is thanking his lucky stars he's again able to play rugby league after a horrific injury which led to fears he could lose his arm.

Pereira was back in training in the 35 degrees heat at WIN Stadium on Tuesday following a lengthy recovery from the freak accident while crossing for a try in July's Canterbury Cup match against Newtown at Henson Park.

"There was a chance I could lose my arm," Pereira said.

"The functionality of my right arm was severely weak. I couldn't pick up a cup of water to drink out of it was so weak, and there was no pain.

"It was super weak so obviously that would have been a career-ending injury."

Sims: The only way is up

Scans and X-rays cleared Pereira of a serious neck injury but he suffered damage to his brachial plexus – the nerve group which comes from the neck and gives the arm function and feeling.

Pereira then had to simply wait to discover if he would regain movement as specialists were unable to advise him about the recovery of nerve damage.

"I am obviously happy that my body is feeling good," he said. "I am not as strong in one particular area but on the field it doesn't seem like it's going to affect my football.

"The neurosurgeon told us that there was basically nothing could make it better but time."

It was also unlikely that Pereira could cause more damage so he worked on improving his speed before being cleared to play for Illawarra in the semi-final of the Canterbury Cup.

The 26-year-old said the match gave him confidence heading into this season and he was now focused on winning back his place in the Dragons starting line-up.

"After getting my first few carries out of the way I felt like I had the same strength I had prior to that [injury] so that was massive for my confidence moving forward," Pereira said.

He's not the only Dragon on the comeback trail with forward Tariq Sims sporting an "ugly" scar from a double groin reconstruction with hernia removal that cut short his 2019 season.

"It brings a tear to my eye," Sims said after describing the operation he finally underwent three months ago after playing through the pain of the injury since February's Charity Shield.

"It feels so good to run without being in pain or having to warm up for 25 minutes just to run."

Sims is also feeling positive about the season ahead after playing with the pain of a severe groin injury until St George Illawarra's finals hopes were gone in Round 22.

With the Dragons incurring a heavy injury toll that included Gareth Widdop (shoulder), James Graham (broken leg), Corey Norman (fractured cheekbone), Korbin Sims (broken arm), Tim Lafai (ankle), Tyson Frizell (ruptured testicle) and Zac Lomax (broken thumb), Sims continued playing.

"I actually did it in the Charity Shield – both of them," Sims said. "It was a tough year but with the coaching staff I felt we managed the situation with the groin as best we could to make sure I was out on the field. Unfortunately, we were dealt some injury blows so I just couldn't take that time off.

"To be where I am and in the position I am in I am really happy at this point of my recovery."

Dragons' top five tries of 2019

The Dragons returned to training this week under assistant coach Dean Young and a new look off-field staff and were put through an arduous session on Tuesday, which included a 1.2km run.

Head coach Paul McGregor is due to return next week from a study trip to the United States, while former Cronulla premiership winning mentor Shane Flanagan is expected to come on board as an assistant next month.

"A bloke of his calibre and coaching experience I think will better our leadership group," Sims said of Flanagan.

"I don't know him from a bar of soap but from what I have seen he is one of those blokes who commands respect because he has earned it. If it is true that is great for the club and I think it is going to be good for the playing squad."
