JT Never Believed In Us: Champion

Happy with new approach...South Sydney's Beau Champion. Picture: Sam Ruttyn Source: The Daily Telegraph

IN-FORM South Sydney centre Beau Champion claims veteran mentor John Lang has changed a culture that had Rabbitohs players fearing for their positions in the team under former coach Jason Taylor.

Crediting Lang's confidence in his players as the basis for Monday night's stunning 38-16 win over Canterbury, Champion noted differences from his time under Taylor, who was sacked following an incident with back-rower David Fa'alogo at the club's end-of-season get-together late last year.

"I personally didn't feel JT had that much confidence in us. I don't think he believed in us that much and he tried to baby us a little too much," Champion said.

"Johnny Lang has come in this year and given us freedom. Every week you can go out there and not have to worry about your spot."

Champion said Lang had breathed new life into the Bunnies, who are now chasing their third straight win this weekend. There was a positivity, Champion said, that was rarely seen during Taylor's reign.

"At the start of the season John said to me and Besty [Colin Best] we'll be the two centres, 'so go out there and show me what you can do'," he said.

"It took the pressure off and let us concentrate on football - we didn't have to worry about 'if I do this or that, my spot will be up for grabs'. We started the season slowly but Langy didn't make changes. In the past, one or two guys may have been dropped and it would create disbelief and friction among the players.

"As Langy said, the best 17 out there he'll keep picking every week and they'll get form over time.

"We played too negative last year. There were times we played really well then played really poorly. We just lacked a little belief. It was like everyone thought it was a fluke or something [when we won] but it was no fluke. We went out there and played what was in front of us, and that's what Langy is letting us do."

Taylor declined to comment when contacted last night.

To be fair, Taylor rebuilt the Bunnies and never got the chance to work with new recruits Dave Taylor and English forward Sam Burgess.

After a wobbly start to the first two rounds, Souths' giant forward pack continued to click against the Bulldogs and, said skipper Roy Asotasi, will not peak until "about round 10".

As for Burgess, Asotasi said: "He definitely likes to get his hands on the ball. He's one of those blokes who has done it in the [English] Super League and for England, and he brings us that aggressive X-factor.

"After Saturday we've got five Sunday games, so hopefully we can get a win against the Knights, then we know we've got a seven-day turnaround to work on things."

Although early the improvement in players such as McPherson, Champion, Lowe and Geddes speaks volumes of John Lang as a coach. He seems to be getting the best out of these players.

Playing with good players makes a hell of a difference.

Sounds like a bit of a suck suck to Lang in my oppinion from Champion.

Many of us were well aware of the culture at South Sydney under the JT regime....the talk of a player revolt seemed accurate and it wasn't healthy for such a promising side to put up with the little maestros crap man-management skills and grumpy style.

In saying that, I don't really care what Taylor has to say now and I can't see the point in an individual player attacking the guy this far down the track - we know the past and there is little reason to fire it around in the media. It's a new season with a brilliant tactical coach that I have full faith in, (you could never say that about JT) and here's hoping we improve week by week to capture the missed opportunities in '09.

John Lang is a top bloke. i wouldn't mind him being my boss. He doesn't have an ego and acknowledges that he is also on a learning curve despite having more experience than JT. JT appears like a "Mr Know It All".

In all honesty, I understand it ended badly for Souths and JT.

But I am certain he was being touted as the saviour, especially semi final time in 2007 and when McRae got punted for him.

It would be interesting to go back on here and look at some posts regarding Taylor from supporters and quotes from players.

I think some people are a bit fickle.

That sounds about right. Taylor did very well with parra before he came to souths.

He coached a severely underperforming group of pretty good players for half a season at Parra. Can't read too much into that stint.

Taylor worked wonders in 2007, but he lost his way in 2008 and 2009. Too many backwards steps in tactics, no courage shown at all in his game plans and that relates directly back to Champions statement of him having no confidence in the players. I bow to his 2007 effort but he had two full years after that and did not progress himself or the team.

Thats my first thought as well sadly both fans and management seem to turn on the coach the second they go through a poor spell rather then asking questions of the blokes on the field!

JT had no tactics, no idea how to use the interchange, he was stubborn to the point of pig headedness. Isaac Luke's performance this year is testimony to that alone. It has not been John Lang's coaching that got him playing 80 minutes, JT had just decided he couldn't and would not change his mind.

The results in 2007 were mainly based on improved defence, our attack was a shambles then also.

Have to laugh at the irony of Souths supporters back-stabbing JT when they all supported McRae getting shafted to accomodate him when he wanted the head coaches job.
Good one Richo.

Did it ever occur to you that he could never coach in the first place ?
Not that many clubs were vying for his services other than us.
But he was the pin-up boy of privatisation so what went wrong ?
