And lost about 10 players before the tournament.

Welsh born players Ben Flower, Ollie Olds, Lloyd White, Rhys Evans and Calvin Wellington.

Also heritage players Jake Emmitt, Gil Dudson, Larne Patrick, Dan Fleming and Daniel Brown.

Most would have been in the starting team.

This is a big loss for a nation with not a lot of depth.
pretty sure Calvin Wellington has returned to play Union in South Wales.

Well if we look at the number of Pacific Island players coming through in the NRL this is why. It's a no brainer ffs if Super League clubs are that smart they should stop bringing in any Australian or New Zealand players at all. They're only looking for a bit of retirement money. I'd send them all home. Invest in the young British/French players coming through and bring in some quality coaches this could perhaps maybe even get Scotland back up on two feet again.. until then the gap will widen further.

Sorry, but I think this approach is a big part of the problem. Its short cited laying the blame at imports if nothing is being done to develop players to a standard matching Southern hemisphere clubs. Without playing regular tough competition, and developing players properly, nothing changes – why will it just magically improve if you put inadequately developed locals in the spots at the expense of hardened professionals? Someone wise said that practice doesn't make perfect, but perfect practice does. If the Super league only has six consistent quality teams, how do players develop if they aren't needed to be playing at their best every week of the season? This quote from john Kear in the article sums it up:

"We trained at the North Queensland Cowboys training ground and those facilities just knock anything in the Super League into a cocked hat.

"So, they not only have a greater player pool, but I also believe they have got a better development path and a better performance path at the elite end and results are showing that.

"I do not want to depress everyone, but results are showing just how good the southern hemisphere teams really are."

I've said it elsewhere, but simply playing a lot of games won’t improve things if the games aren’t high standard. Domestic comps have to be strong and improving players. To use an extreme, if a player has a 300 game career in League 1, would that make him Super league or NRL ready. I doubt it. What needs to improve this aspect is probably more important than just filling spots with raw kids.
