Just out of interest - how do you rate players?

Twice the half of two and a half times two,
then minus two and a half and divide it by 2 .
Then just multiply that by two.

Easy.

If you go to the games , some players just stand out, ok they might make mistakes but their passion and involvement stand out .Gallen ,Noddy , Bailiey , Nuts , Stevo, Peach, Covell , no order here ,actually the whole team is going so well! But those guys do it every week at that high standard.

I see each game live each week, so I don't use stats or comentators opinions. At the ground you usually get a good feel for a players impact, the little yards in each hit up, the impact their hit up makes, whether they are denting the line and bending the line backwards, making the defence get back harder than a lazy hit up.

I believe you get a far better feel for who is going well and who the opposition is threatened by. I can also get a good handle on who is struggle in defence, who is playing good position for kick returns and who isn't, who is talking, who is pumped and who is low on confidence.

It's totally subjective but I rely on feel and general impressions after the 80 minutes, the players who stand out are usually pretty easy to remember and rate.

Absolutely Dot. Being there gives you a completely different perspective. That's why I usually have the game taped and watch it when I get home, or the next day for home games. I like to get both perspectives. Then I have a quick look at the hit ups, tackles, mistackles and errors.

Consistency is a big thing for me. Rather than just make a power play I want to see players who impress with a high percentage of their touches and don't hide from the football.
I think it's also important not just to look at the guy who crossed the stripe or the person who through the last pass but at the players who got the ball that far down the field in the first place.
If you're at the game you don't need to check the stats and I often find they aren't a completely accurate picture of the game. e.g. He sits at the pointy end of the clubs tryscorers table but would you really say that David Simmons is the most potent attacking weapon we have?

I like this one. I speak a bit of "flash" in this joint. "Flash" being the one off big hit or the spectacular try, an isolated good run. I don't like to reward (for want of a better word) "flash" for the sake of it.

Tries are the icing on the cake and it's a cake that takes a lot of preparation and planning. Some guys do ten times the work in the leadup.

Defence is the same. A lot of work goes into it and not just making the tackles. The positioning, the talk, the body language, the anticipation etc etc all makes it work just as well as the actual tackles.

It's been interesting reading, thanks for the replies one and all.

Thanks mate. And I gotta say, keep the good threads comin' you started a few noodle scratchers recently, and it's made the forums alot more interesting than just reading about petty rivalries.
