AFTER being the toast of Ipswich last season, Kurt Capewell could face the ultimate NRL grand final heartbreak.
Jets co-coach Ben Walker has issued a plea for Cronulla to show the faith in Capewell for Sunday’s premiership decider against Melbourne.
Capewell, 23, has played just four NRL games after joining the Sharks from Ipswich’s 2015 Intrust Super Cup premiership team but two of those have been in this year’s finals series.
Despite his impressive play-off performances, Capewell could be the man to make way for the return of experienced duo Sam Tagataese and Joseph Paulo if they prove their fitness.
Walker, Brisbane’s 18th man in the 1998 NRL grand final against Canterbury, said Capewell was ready for the big stage.
“He’s certainly up to it,” Walker said.
“His four games have looked like he was a 150-game veteran.
“He’s definitely mature enough to stand up on grand final day.”
Kurt Capewell has impressed in two finals matches for the Sharks.
Capewell, a raw backrower who can play across the park, made his NRL debut in Round 18 and played his second game as a Shark six weeks later.
He produced a faultless 73-minute performance in the absence of Wade Graham and Paul Gallen during Cronulla’s major semi-final win over Canberra, retaining his spot for last Friday’s preliminary final against North Queensland.
Sharks coach Shane Flanagan will name his grand final team on Tuesday.
“I think (Tagataese) would be very close,” he said.
“He was close this week. Joseph Paulo will be in the same boat.
“Now we’ve got a game to go they will be pushing really hard to be available ... it’s a good position to be in for me to have those players available.”
Kurt Capewell could make way for Sam Tagataese or Joseph Paulo.
Walker said Capewell was a more versatile bench option than former Bronco Gerard Beale.
“In his first game it looked like he’d played 100 NRL games,” he said.
“He looked like a seasoned pro. He did everything he had to do.
“I was more impressed when he came on when Graham was injured and Gallen was out. He showed he is certainly ready.
“For someone to play a major final in their third game and play for 73 minutes … I don’t know many blokes who could do that.
“Kurt has played wing, centre, fullback and forwards. He’d be more valuable to the team on the bench than Beale.”
