WORLD Cup-winning Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney has turned his back on a potentially lucrative deal to take over the reins at English Super League powerhouse Wigan.
The New Zealand Rugby League, anxious to avoid a repeat of the messy Brian McLennan affair of two years ago when the then Kiwi coach quit to join Leeds, welcomed the news last night.
"It's great news and it's also not really a surprise either, given the way Stephen has conducted himself as Kiwis coach so far," NZRL general manager Peter Cordtz told Sunday News. "It's also consistent with what he has said to us about the Kiwis coaching role."
Wigan's strong interest in Kearney underlines how difficult it is becoming for the NZRL to prevent English clubs wresting away their head coach.
The prestigious Cherry and Whites were lining up Kearney to replace coach Brian Noble from the 2010 season. Kearney, also an assistant coach with the Melbourne Storm NRL club, went so far as to tell NZRL officials about the "expression of interest".
But yesterday his agent Chris Orr revealed the Kiwis coach had decided not to enter into contract negotiations with Wigan for fear it would cost him his role with the New Zealand national side.
"Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan came out to Australia. He was looking at a few candidates and one of them was Stephen," Orr said.
"We had a discussion but nothing further than that really because Stephen decided that, due to his commitments as New Zealand coach and the success he's had with the team, the time wasn't right to leave that job."
Kearney was reluctant to comment.
"There's nothing to say," he said. "My goal is to coach first-grade at some point in time.
"I'm confident that opportunity will present itself in good time."
Kearney is off contract at the end of this year's Four Nations tournament in Europe.
He wants to stay in the job beyond 2009 and it's understood the NZRL is also keen to get a new deal finalised
