Kelly will bleed blue

10/06/2008 10:39:00 AM
Former Kempsey junior Albert Kelly will line up at five-eighth for the NSW under 18s when they meet Queensland in the precursor to State of Origin II at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane tomorrow.
Kelly and his team mates went into camp last Friday and flew into Brisbane on Sunday ahead of the clash with the Maroons.
The 17 year-old said he was expecting big things in his first Origin match.
“It’s going to be pretty awesome, the atmosphere is really huge up there,” Kelly said.
“This will be the fifth time I’ve played at Suncorp so I’m pretty used to it, but this is Origin and anything could happen.”
The call up to the NSW squad came as something of a surprise for the talented youngster, who now plies his trade with the Parramatta Eels in the SG Ball competition.
But under the guidance of Eels coach Joe Grima and playing alongside club mates Mitchel Johnson and Tim Auremi, Kelly won’t feel too out of place when he takes his spot on the paddock for tomorrow night’s clash.
“I kind of expected to be picked, people had been telling me how well I’d been playing in the lead-up,” he said.
“But it will be tough, Queensland will pick a big, strong side and they’ll bring their best for the game.”
Kelly said he wouldn’t be drawn in to the banter that traditionally precedes State of Origin matches, preferring to instead let his actions do the talking, but admitted he felt more nervous ahead of this match than he had when representing Australia.
“There’s probably more expected of you when you’re wearing a Blues jumper,” he said.
“Origin’s like the pinnacle of football in Australia.”
The talented youngster has also won selection in the NSW CCC (Combined Catholic Colleges) side to contest the ASSRL (Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League) finals to be played in Darwin from July 13-18.
Kelly, who attends Patrician Brothers College in Blacktown, will be under the tutelage of Mustangs first grade coach and St Paul’s College teacher Mark Morrison. The team had its first hit out against a Wests Tigers academy squad last Saturday.

i call it cocky, TBH i don't like it

You will like him when he is playing first grade. The kid has a right to be cocky he is a gun. If Williams does go and I am not convinced of that just yet, I will not be as shattered as if we lose this kid.

I saw him in only 2 games and and i'm very impressed. Ex cellent defence and sublime running and passing game.

And in the age of 5/8's being rare we have 3 of the most talented coming through. Mateo,Keating, Kelly.

I agree the way he moves reminds me of Andrew Walker, but I hope and think he will be much better. Those three players could hopefully be our 6, 7 and 13.

Well if we can get Keating at halfback within 2 years, and then follow with Kelly a year of so later. But i thought timmy was going to be here for 10 years in 05. I wont count my chicken yet

Yeah, I could see K Keating playing a half backs roll. He's game would be suited to it.

But that's a long way off.... we'll probably lose Kelly and Keating to the Manly EELgales...........

Depressing isn't it? To have watched these players come througth the grades.... T Smith, Lyon, Tonga, Williams x 3, Ryan etc etc etc and to see them in other colours is heart breaking.

well Williams brother dont care tbh, Lyon is a tosser but was heart breaking at the time, Timmy is understandable but was coming for a while. Ryan needed better oppurtunity and Tomy, well that is life.

We produce probably 1/4 talent in the NRL, and that why in we loss alot. We just have to try and keep our best players. by 2010 Hindy, Fui and Cayless will be off the books, Hayne, Inu, Mateo will be our best players and we will be able to support a heaver pay cheque for Keating and Kelly which they will probably demand.

Guys like Cordoba, Hauraki, Paulo and Manna wont demand asmuch as Hindy and Cayless did, which if you look back now was probably a mistake to pay so much for.

Going by what happened with Williams i think we will lose Kelly. Another club with identify his obvious talent, give him a huge figure and we won't match it because " We cannot justify such a salary for a player who has yet to play first grade so is unproven at that level"

Hybrid, so the argument in many ways is why do we bother to identify talent. Perhaps oiur criticism should be directed towards the lack of recognition by the NRL of the benefits of junior development, it seems to me that the vultures get away with it, thanks in no small part to the player managers and the lack of say a transfer fee.

I actually believe it is a big risk to pay these guys full time money before they have proved themselves, but that may be a bit old fashioned, sometimes players are ill advised by relatives and managers, but it is up to the NRL and the lacklustre Gallop to find a way to support the clubs that breed juniors

Fully agree, Their is no incentive in bringing through a player when have vulchers like Manly and the Roosters and Cronulla that just pounce when the youngsters are just about right to play 1st grade.

Their needs to be compensation of some sort otherwise why should Parra waste their money??

Yeah i totally agree that there should be something similar to the EPL, with a fee paid to the club that developed the player for anyone under 21(i think) that gets bought by another club

Don't expect that puppet Gallop to come up with anything, he only does what his news limited masters tell him. Hopefully we can keep this kid he sounds like a gun.
