Kevin Keegan resigns as Newcastle United manager

· Keegan unhappy at club's transfer policy
· Second spell at St James' Park ends in acrimony

After days of confusion, Kevin Keegan's future was clarified tonight when he resigned as Newcastle manager.
"I've been working desperately hard to find a way forward with the directors, but sadly that has not proved possible," Keegan said in a statement. "It's my opinion that a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want.
"It remains my fervent wish to see Newcastle United do well in the future and I feel incredibly sorry for the players, staff and most importantly the supporters. I have been left with no choice other than to leave."
Reports first surfaced on Tuesday that Keegan had been sacked from his post as Newcastle manager, a claim the club later denied. Keegan, however, had not attended a training session since the transfer window closed.
The relationship between Keegan and the club's owner, Mike Ashley, have been strained for some time with the manager believed to be unhappy over his lack of control in the transfer market. The club's alleged attempts to sell Joey Barton's and Michael Owen are said to have brought the tension to a head on Monday night and tonight's events had an air of weary inevitability.

What a terribly ran club..

It is no surprise they are in trouble, all you have to do is watch any Newcastle game and see the owner, Ashley downing beers with the fans every game.

In a way it is good to see him mingling with the fans, but it sums up Newcastle really. A real lack of professionalism.

They love Keegan.

No way Ashley will be sitting with the fans next time. They'll lynch him.

Steve Wraith, editor of Newcastle fanzine Players Inc, said Keegan was the "most important man in Newcastle United's history that's still alive". About 200 Magpies fans gathered outside the club's St James' Park ground, urging owner Mike Ashley and director of football Dennis Wise to step down.

Ahhh..I was wondering who that guy was.

The coverage of the Arsenal V Newcastle game showed him a few times sitting amognst the Toon faithful, at one stage pretty much downing an entire pint in one mouthful

Keegan = sook.:roll:

Not really, in the situation he had, he really had no choice and it would have been difficult for him to walk away from the cl;ub he loves.

After he signed on as manager, Ashley brought Dennis Wise in as director of football over the top of Keegan without consulting Keegan. Wise was a midly successful League One manager. Wise had the say in the transfer market. Not Keegan. Keegan couldn't spend on players he wanted, nor could he stop players from being sold. His position was really untennable IMO.

Bit of a shame really, they did well under Keegan late last season and started alright this year...

Oh yeah, totally understand his reasons.

The fact he was given the two players they signed before the deadline (their names beyond me at the moment) when he had neither seen them play or wanted them in the first place is a disgrace. Not to mention it's being reported all he really wanted was a LB. As well as the desire by Wise and co to pass over Owen and Barton to whoever wanted them.

Not a fan of Barton at all, but this is clearly a prime example of the negatives of private ownership, one of major the reasons I lean against Arsenal becoming privately owned.

Some sh*t clearly needs to be sorted at the Toon.

On another note - With Curbishley gone as well, plus Man City's newly acquired fortunes, what a week.

I watched a fantastic 1/2 hour long interview on Fox the other week with Alex Ferguson. He really is a superb bloke and you could tell why he was such a success as a manager just by the things he said.

But the thing that stood out for me was when he said that the manager absolutely must be THE man in charge. In charge of which players come in, which ones go, the training, discipline, everything.

And he said that when that situation breaks down the club is asking for a disaster. And he also said that there's no way he would have it any other way because the manager must have full control.

Absolutely spot on really. And i dont think there'd be anyone more than Fergie who could agree with Keegan's decision to step down more.

There's a couple of very good articles on the newcastle/Keegan situation at the guardian.co.uk

It's an interesting point though, outside of the Premier League, it's not uncommon for Managers not to have complete say in transfers. Klinsi, for example at Bayern, doesnt have complete control. Nor did Hitzfeld before him.

That being said, there's now way players would be shopped around behind their backs, and they'd certainly be consulted about who they want or where they say the shortfalls

I feel for Keegan. He really does bleed black and white, but he really had no choice.

Keegan and Magpies owner meet
From correspondents in London, England
September 13, 2008
FORMER Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan held shock talks with the Barclay's Premier League club's owner Mike Ashley on Saturday (EST).

However it was unclear whether or not the discussions were linked to Keegan returning to the manager's hot-seat, just eight days after he sensationally walked out.

The League Managers Association (LMA) confirmed that talks "to resolve several issues were held" between Keegan and Ashley.

"However, the discussions failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion," said an LMA statement.

Former England manager Keegan resigned as Newcastle manager for the second time on September 4, stating: "It's my opinion that a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want."

Keegan's departure led to a backlash from supporters against the Newcastle board, and specifically Ashley and executive director of football Dennis Wise.

Protests have been planned ahead of Sunday's (EST) Premier League match against Hull at St James' Park.

Keegan may have to pay compensation to Newcastle for leaving his post after less than eight months, and discussions over that issue could also have prompted a meeting with Ashley.
