It was the same when he was a player... people underrated him majorly. The NSW selectors of who picked Johns at hooker to accommodate Brett at half were the only ones with a grain of sense and they STILL get blasted for that decision even though IMO it was the right call at the time.

he was a one-dimensional player who for some reason kept Andrew Johns from playing the number of games for NSW and Australia as he should have

Thomas was the best of the Kimmorly brothers.

Thomas Kimmorley never even played FG....

I never saw him play though, do you think he was better in the junior system?

i thought Brett was a very dominate junior coming through the ranks

brett was just lucky that he had the best approach to training and the better personality of the kimmorley brothers..

it was those two traits, not his talent, which saw him succeed..

the other two were superior players in every aspect.

Brett definitely had a reputation for his work ethic. You could see it in his kick-chase which IMO was the best of all time.
I often wonder what could have been if not for injuries. People regard players like Lockyer, Slater, Lewis, Sonny Bill and langer and johns as being the best players of all time (depending on who you ask). But if not for injuries and bad luck perhaps we'd be talking about other players like Tom Kimmorley and even the young black boy Johns spoke spoke about in his biography as being the best player he ever played with.

i think part of the reason people are so negative towards Brett could be the fact he made it at the expense of the more talented..

Chris Anderson getting him picked in rep teams when he probably didn't deserve it.

Constantly putting in rubbish performances on big occasions I.e origin, big semi finals etc

Complete mercenary who would leave a club for 5c more a year.

Coming to cronulla who had got within a bees dick of the GF, replacing the current Dally M medal winner and crowd favourite then producing absolute shite to see the team nowhere near the finals. Preston Campbell was released and went onto win a Comp with penrith the next year.

Otherwise he comes across as a decent guy.

I think the Preston Campbell situation really hurt his reputation. Preston had that breakout year in 01, the Anderson came along in 02 and favoured Kimmorley over Campbell (even though they did make the preliminary finally it did anger people the way Campbell wash just set aside). It didn't help that Preston went on to play an important role in panthers premiership the very next year. I think new south Wales really stuffed up not picking Kimmorley after johns retired. They went with a youth policy of picking guys who weren't ready, with an eye to the future (mullen, pearce, Wallace) instead of picking Kimmorley, Who was probably the best performing blues halfback at the time and had the experience they needed

First response nailed it. NSW will never forgive that pass and hos commentary is shockingly bias.

Do you get the feeling he doesn't like Penrith when listening to him? it could be my paranoia playing up but I used to think that even when he was calling NYC/NSW Cup.

He never misses and opportunity to stick the boot into the Knights. His commentary on Saturday was amusing. Great player, though he was lucky that Joey was good enough to win games from hooker and that Chris Anderson had a love affair with him.
