"Kiwi Origins"

How about 18 Nrl teams, 18 rounds+4weeks finals, oz soo, nz equivalent, pacific cup at same time, leading into four nations. Which would make season just over 30 weeks with byes etc (less burn out?) don't think Nrl clubs will want less rounds?
We have to remember the idea of nz origin is to keep kiwis playing for nz not nsw or qld for cash or the challenge.

Sorry, but this is such a poor reason to set up a NZ Origin...

It's the same reason that state of origin was set up in the first place, all the queenslanders heading south to play for the cashed up Sydney clubs in nswrl. The concept was also touted as something that wouldn't last and Queensland wouldn't have the talent to challenge nsw. Many of the same themes coming through in this thread.

If kiwis chose SOO for the challenge setting up a NZ copy isnt going to help. It will never be as 'prestigious' as SOO.

And there is the truth of it.

The international game needs to be raised. The RLIF needs to be more firm on a number of issues and the national bodies must ensure that they do what is ultimately for the greater good

I see a lot of people tossing around the idea of reduced rounds

The winner of the bid for the new TV deal won't be putting up big money for less product

A Auckland vs. The Rest game would be pretty cool, and might even give some players who aren't making the kiwis a chance for some rep footy. May even grow the game more outside of AKL.

I cant see it being anywhere near of a spectacle as SoO though... as long as we dont market it as a NZ SoO then it wont be as much as a 'let down' event.

I guess if it happens, it's all good. More money for NZ players, a new way to lock in potential Kiwis, etc etc. It's going to be bad for Island nations though, as instead of 17 players we have 34... so there's a higher likelihood of them losing guys like Hurrell and Fish etc.

End of the day, there's people in high-powered positions who have to make something work. Simply playing the victim card and saying 'there's nothing we can do' means they may as well find a new job. I'm looking at you, Tony Kemp.
