Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere.

Have just seen in the print edition of the SMH that the Kiwis are going to miss out on playing the Boxing Day test as the West Indies are apparently the preferred side.

The Kiwis haven't played a Boxing Day test for a long time. 1987 was the last time, right?
They haven't played a New Year's test at the SCG for even longer I believe.

The Kiwi's are a quality side and good to watch. Not suprising though.

That is rather startling isn't it - wonder when Australian fans will get tired of their exclusive little club with England and India. All about the $$, so not sure it matters

What a ridiculous farce this whole "future tours" program is.

Based on the stats above, clearly CA just do whatever the f-k they want along with India and England and that is the end of that. Ignoring South Africa and having 2-test series with them highlights the fact even more. It also invalidates the entire rankings system because it's so heavily skewed to only particular opponents.

Can't understand the logic behind choosing the Windies over The Black Caps for Boxing Day.

There seems to be literally no argument for this decision, NZ will bring greater crowds, greater publicity & interest and better quality cricket.

Yeah I was hoping we could have jagged a Boxing Day test this coming summer...

Unfortunately I think NZ just don't appeal to the viewers i don't think.

I could understand it of India, England or Sourh Aftica were on the same summer... But the WI's,,. Jezz.... With the greatest respect to them.... They are a rabble at the moment...

Also... TBF to Cricket Australia... The cynic in me wonder's if NZ Cricket has a hand in this also,,, because I doubt they get any money from NZ participating in one of those big Aussie series... Whereas if we play the early series... We can come back and host a Boxing Day test in NZ which already makes them money...

Remember the days when we used to play 5-test match series against the Windies (even in the Windies as well)? Our tour over there in June will only be 2 test matches. Oh how CA's priorities have changed over time.

The final straw was that 2000/01 summer, when we hammered them 5-0 in the test series, and then won every ODI in the tri-series against them and Zimbabwe. It was a ratings disaster for Ch9. The only highlights from that summer were the Zimbots pulling off an upset against the Windies at the SCG in a very low-scoring ODI, Douggy Marillier nearly winning the impossible against Australia at the WACA in the final over (and was the first use of the 'scoop' shot that MS Dhoni has been false accredited with), Brian Lara's 116* which was cruelled by rain, and Mark Waugh's 173 in the 2nd final of the tri-series. The 1999 series was our last test series against them that I would call competitive.

When looking at the above it appears that test cricket sides are lumped into groups

Top Tier - AUS, ENG, IND, SAF
Next Tier - NZL, PAK, SRL, WIN
Bottom Tier - BAN, ZIM

Which I'm sure many people would agree with.

However the problem is that there is not enough tests by nations in top tier against lower tiers

Since Jan 1, 2006 there have been 377 Tests - 110 of these have been matches between Australia, England, India and South Africa.

If the game is to grow and get better in the poorer nations, then it is imperative that all test nations play each other more consistently and regularly.

The fact 3 of those 4 top tier nations have not played against every other test side in at least 1 test since Jan 1, 2006 is another thing that needs to be addressed

Absolutely no surprise with those first two, as that's where the big money is.

Funny how the priorities have changed over the years. As I said, it wasn't very long ago we were playing 5-test series vs West Indies, the 1996 one-off test in Delhi was the first time we played a test in India in 10 years, and the 1999/00 test series vs India was the first time we had played them at home for 8 years.

I would like to see us play a 5-test series vs South Africa sometime in the near future.

That's right. It was the 87/88 series, we played the third test in Melbourne and was a thrilling draw.

Why it was thrilling as we won the first test, and drew the 2nd. And then in the 3rd test we were set a target of about 250, but slumped to 9-220 odd with only a few overs remaining. McDermott and Whitney were at the crease and managed to hold off Hadlee's bowling to save the game for Australia. It was our first series win for a while.

85/86 was the last time we played NZL in Sydney.

Last few times we've played them has been just a 2 test series, but I wouldn't mind another 3 test series they have improved in test over the years.

It was actually pretty competitive in 2009/10.

We won 2-0 but we hammered them in Brisbane, as we often do (as most sides don't do the lead up work needed for an overseas tour anymore). Adelaide was drawn and we could've easily lost. We were 118 behind with 5 wickets in hand when the game finished. Then in Perth we only won by 35 runs after being rolled for 150 in the second innings.

There were a lot of signs that summer of the disaster approaching twelve months later.

Re Zimbabwe, didn't they get stripped of Test status at some stage or did I imagine it?

The West Indies suck, but everything is about TV rights these days and they seem to rate well in India for some reason....more people there watching, more money for CA. Sad but true.

The Windies are basically minnows so im sure the Kiwi players are thrilled to know they are a worse money making proposition than minnows.

I reckon it's shitty too. But money (and the subcontinent) rules the game these days

For that reason, we will never see 5-test series vs West Indies again. I can see the test schedule dominated by Australia, England, India and to a lesser extent South AFrica for quite some time, whilst the other countries are unfortunately left languishing. That's the ICC for you.

One thing I would like to see return is 6-test Ashes series. Last one occurred in 1997. The 1998 West Indies vs England series doesn't count as another test match was added to make up for the 1st test that was abandoned after 10 overs due to a crap pitch.

Jesus, the West Indies are laughably bad. What are Cricket Australia thinking? It's not 1987 anymore, the West Indies don't put bums on seats because of who they are these days.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. So the two marquee tests will last 3 days if we're lucky and the run-in series will be brilliant.
