Because the only way is up from here...can't get much worse.

Hopefully with Thomas now gone they can now start moving in a positive direction. Marburys in the last year on his ridiculous contract next season ($21 Million) With more of their bonehead contracts coming off the books they'll end up with some cap space to start making some smart moves (Then again, it's the Knicks we are talking about)

The Knicks are going to be bad for a while, the whole team is either selfish assholes, on terrible cap-killing contracts, or both. They have some bright spots like David Lee, but it's going to take years for them to fix the mess they're in.

Pretty good as far as im concerned. Just had a very under acheiving Mavericks side for the last few years.
Id be interested in seeing how he goes building his own team if the Knicks pick him up.

I'm no expert on the salary cap, but the key is trading Randolph. When LeBron next comes off contract, in the summer of 2010 (our June 2010), they'll have $46,400,526 in committed salaries (inclusive of the player options on Jared Jeffries & Eddy Curry, neither of whom will be walking away), plus whatever extension David Lee is signed to. So they won't necessarily have the room to offer him a big contract anyway, unless Randolph's $18m contract that year is off the books.

Now Randolph is a talented player, a 20-10 guy, but nobody in the league wants to play with him and no team (other than the Knicks) is crazy enough to pay him $18m a year when he doesn't play defence and doesn't pass the ball.

And LeBron apparently is close with Jay-Z who part owns the Nets and is looking to move them to Brooklyn, so the Knicks might not even be in with a chance anyway. I can't see the Knicks being a competitive team in the next 5 years minimum.

D'Antoni has been announced as their new coach. Not bad, comes into a roster low on confidence and by all accounts with bad attitudes but there's some pieces to work around, Crawford, Robinson, Lee, Richardson. IF they can trade Randolph & perhaps use Starbury's expiring contract for picks and/or a nice athletic big they might just be half decent next year. They've got the number 5 pick in this year's draft I think so in that range there should be a nice wing available.

Details?

Um, married, kids, mid-50s?
Deal is 5 years for $30m.

Coached Phoenix for last 5 & 1/2 years, two Conference Finals, two Conference Semi-finals and this year lost in first round of the playoffs. Either Randolph or Curry has to go, he can only afford to carry one on his squad, problem will be finding a trade partner. Next season might be a write-off again, depending on moves they make, but he's a good coach who's team play attractive basketball and he has juggled egos before (Amare/Marion) with some success. I think it's a good move by the Knicks, he won't tolerate any crap and the players will definitely like playing in his system. Going to be an interesting summer.

randolph or curry??

i'd probablly randolph, we have so many scoring options and not realy defenders, and curry is the best defender we have, but it zack;s d improved then i'd trade curry definately, i think we need to trade marbury, nate robinson and fred jones are more than capable of getting the job done plus we get way more cap space, but the question remains who would want him? not many. jamal crawfard needs to go back to school, he does some stupid things at times, and if they come off they r good but most of the times they dont, plus hes a ball hog. david lee to improve and nate and their other rookies, they'll get more game time as well, i dont expect much of an improvement, however i would be happy (alot) if they made top 8 of east.

No.

Marion wanted to be traded so he was no longer the third wheel. Amare wanted to be the man and didn't want to share the spotlight (still the case). Those two butted heads frequently. But instead of having only two guys that wanted the spotlight, D'Antoni's now going to a situation where the entire roster is like that.

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/new_york.htm

seems that New york are indeed in a good position in terms of salary cap room, to make Lebron an offer when he becomes a free agent at the end of the 09/10 season. Marbury will be at best gone, or at least on a lesser contract. They really need to get rid of Crawford though, the man he can score 40 a game, provided he gets his 100 shot attempts up.

That $28m total doesn't include the player options for both Curry & Jeffries (in total an additional $18m) and neither will walk away from those options because they won't get the same as a free agent. And expect David Lee to get an extension in the $5m-$6m range next summer. So all up call it $25m on top of the $28m in committed salaries. That's $53m and with the salary cap going to be around $60m, they will need to shed at least another $10m of payroll - buying contracts out won't work because they continue to count towards the cap. Marbury won't be re-signed, I'd expect them to shop him like crazy this summer/during the season and even if they only get garbage back for him it's better than nothing (as long as there are no long term contracts taken back).

If nothing else, it's going to be interesting to see how Walsh and D'Antoni try and fix the mess they've been left by Zeke.

i agree, thats why they really need to get rid of Crawford, apart from, that, they should be good. They could used the whole percentage increase thing, offer him something like 16mill-17 mill in his first year. Marbury is the real blight on their whole situation, imagine paying him 20 mill a season to create mayhem. Pity too, he was such a good player 3-4 years ago

I saw there was some talk about sending crawford to the raptors for tj ford. It would allow the raptors to give Calderon the start and give them a legit 2nd option to bosh. I like it for both teams the more I think about it. TJ Ford would be a good running pg for D'Antoni.

I think they will let Marbury walk or buy him out. They don't need to trade him because they want to cut salary for Lebron. However the Nuggets are shopping Melo. I think if im the knicks I get TJ Ford and I try my best to send Marbury and that massive expiring (and cash to help the nuggets in a potential buy out), future picks(i dont think they can trade this years just yet) and say david lee to try and take back Melo and bad contracts - Kenyon Martin? n all the fillers to make it work. The knicks would be messing their cap AGAIN but if they got Melo then would it really matter?

then go with

ford
Richardson
melo
randolph
curry

then try and hope someone will take curry or zac. The problem with that line up everyone would still want to be putting up 20 ppg. ugh what a mess..

That team would leak around 397 points per game i recon. No defence whatsoever...
